What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mid Backend Developer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Mid Backend Developer, you need strong programming skills in languages such as Java, Python, or Node.js, along with a solid understanding of databases and API design, typically backed by a bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with tools and systems like Git, RESTful APIs, Docker, and cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure) is usually required. Problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and teamwork are crucial soft skills that set high performers apart. Job description

Developer – Mid-Level to Senior

Location: Connecticut (On-site, Hybrid, or Remote)

About the Role

We're looking for a software developer to join our small, focused team building the custom systems that differentiate our company. You'll work across the full development stack—from backend services to web applications to desktop software. Your focus is on writing code that matters; business requirements flow through proper channels so you can stay concentrated on development.

We are not a traditional organization. You'll be involved in all aspects of development—from architecture discussions to code reviews. You'll learn by doing, with guidance from our programming lead.

What You'll Do

• Design, build and maintain backend services, web applications, and desktop software (Maui) that power internal operations

• Develop systems with an eye toward minimizing technical debt and choosing the right tools for the job

• Participate in code reviews, architecture decisions, and knowledge sharing as you grow in the role

• Focus on code while requirements are handled through established channels

Required Skills

• C# and .NET 5+

• Dependency Injection and Asynchronous Programming

• Unit Testing (NUnit)

• Entity Framework Core

• SQL Server

• Docker

• PowerShell

• Basic UI creation with HTML, TypeScript, and Vue

What We Value

• Technical quality. We prioritize solid code and limiting technical debt over shipping fast. We want to build things we're proud of.

• Equipped for success. We provide developers with the best tools available to do their jobs. If you need something, we get it. No politics, no approval hierarchies.

• Team fit. Your personality and how you work with others matters as much as your technical skills. We're a small team, and we need people who collaborate and communicate well.

• Demonstrated learning ability. We care more about your willingness and ability to grow than your years of experience. Show us you can learn.

About You

We're hiring at mid-level or senior—experience is less important than capability and fit. You understand the fundamentals of software engineering, you write code that other people can read and maintain, and you're genuinely interested in building things that matter. You're comfortable wearing multiple hats and growing into new responsibilities.

Portfolio, side projects, contributions, certifications, or any other evidence of your work is welcome.

Why Join

You'll work in a small organization without the bureaucracy of larger corporations. Need a tool? We get it. Want to try a different approach? Let's discuss it. No endless approval chains, no politics—just focus on building good software that makes a difference.

Reporting

You'll report directly to the Director of IT.

Compensation

Commensurate with experience and demonstrated skills.
