A metrology engineer, or metrologist, specializes in science or engineering-related measurements. Their duties may include calibrating instruments, designing new tools or systems of measurement, interpreting data, or researching the science of measuring. Many subfields work with metrologists, including mechanical engineering. There are two levels of metrology certification available through the Coordinate Metrology Society (CMS).
| Aspect | Metrology Engineer | Quality Control Engineer |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Bachelor's in Engineering, certifications in metrology or calibration | Bachelor's in Engineering, certifications in quality assurance or control |
| Work Environment | Laboratories, calibration labs, manufacturing plants | Manufacturing lines, inspection facilities, production environments |
| Employer & Industry Usage | Manufacturing, aerospace, automotive, electronics | Manufacturing, consumer goods, pharmaceuticals, automotive |
| Common Search & Comparison Intent | Understanding technical calibration roles, measurement accuracy | Ensuring product quality, defect prevention |
Metrology Engineers focus on precise measurement, calibration, and maintaining measurement systems, ensuring accuracy in manufacturing processes. Quality Control Engineers oversee product inspections and testing to ensure standards are met. While both roles aim to improve product quality, Metrology Engineers specialize in measurement systems, whereas Quality Control Engineers focus on final product quality assurance.

The Metrology Engineer in a Navy calibration lab plays a critical role in the METCAL Program, ensuring the accuracy, traceability, and reliability of test, measurement, and diagnostic equipment (TMDE) through calibration procedures aligned with NIST and DoD standards to support fleet readiness and naval operations. This position involves science of metrology, calibration of TMDE, performing measurement uncertainty analyses and measurement traceability, and troubleshooting equipment to maintain compliance in a DoD Navy calibration laboratory. Job Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions) Work independently or with minimal supervision on complex projects, including reviewing TMDE specifications, performing uncertainty analysis and measurement traceability, and calculating test accuracy ratios.
Develop, calibrate, and maintain measurement instruments and systems to ensure compliance with Navy, national and international standards. Guide Inter-Laboratory Comparison program IAW Navy METCAL policy and guidance. Design and implement metrology platforms, including test procedures, data analysis, and quality control guidelines for product specifications.
Recommend new Calibration/Measurement processes and procedures; Conduct reviews, validations, and documentation of metrology procedures; Maintain Statistical Process Control for laboratory supported measurement areas. Analyze measurement data to identify trends, discrepancies, and opportunities for process improvement; certify equipment and processes for accuracy Generate Calibration Measurement Reports (CMRs) to document technical requirements and analysis. Provide support with the development and implementation of calibration procedures in accordance with Navy METCAL policy.
Education - A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in an engineering, computer science, mathematics, or physical science. Technical Experience: Two (2) years of work-related experience demonstrating a technical understanding of the work. (A GPA of 3.0 or higher may be substituted for one year of experience.) Preferred Qualifications or Skills Technical experience includes: Knowledge of the Navy Metrology and Calibration (METCAL) Program and ANSI/ISO/IEC 17025:2005 accreditation
Preparing a variety of metrology directives, including Instrument Calibration Procedures (ICP), Metrology. Drafting Engineering Reports, Quality Manuals, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Conducting engineering investigations/evaluations, calculations, and preparing final designs of measurement systems.
Communicating and coordinating with local personnel, commercial calibration labs, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to maintain and improve calibration lab capabilities. Providing metrology technical advice, engineering services and calibration support. Developing computer programs to automate calibration calculations and measurements.
Documenting computer hardware and software configurations in accordance with ANSI/ISO/IEC 17025:2005. Documenting uncertainty budgets to properly account for calibration and testing error sources.
