JOB OPENING: We have a great career opportunity available for a Preservation and Metadata Librarian in our Columbia, South Carolina headquarters. Under general supervision of the Director of Library Collections, the ability to exercise good judgement in applying established department and agency policies and procedures is essential.
Requires consistent exercise of discretion and judgement. Adheres to preservation standards. Recives guidance from Department Director in resolving problem situations; however, must make day-to-day decisions concerning general duties of the position.
The candidate must have excellent customer service skills with the ability to interact courteously and effectively with internal and external customers. They should have excellent organizational skills, attention to detail and the ability to handle multiple projects and meet deadlines under limited supervision. They must have the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing with all levels of staff and management.
Major Responsibilities: Preservation work with DYSS X5 digital cutting machine and maintains supplies. Regularly pulls materials from State Library collections for re-housing. Performs preservation on print materials from the collection and regularly fulfills internal preservation requests.
Provides information and training on preservation handling for staff and patrons. Co-manages all preservation supplies. Manages rare book collection through patron appointments, condition reports, physical preservation, and regularly displaying items in display case.
Consults with staff and manager on rare item acquisitions. Performs metadata and/or cataloging work as necessary when projects require. Special assignments, projects, developmental goals, or other duties as assigned.

Minimum and Additional Requirements A master's degree in library science from an ALA accredited college or university and appropriate professional library experience.
Ability to lift and move materials, bending and reaching to perform regular collection maintenance. Preferred Qualifications Experience in preservation and archival collection practices and standards. Knowledge of the basic principles of professional library practices and techniques, especially cataloging and metadata.
Experience working collaboratively and independently with varied groups within an organization. Ability to organize time effectively to manage a variety of projects simultaneously. Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues.
Additional Comments Work takes place in an office environment. Overnight travel is not expected for this position, however may be occasionally necessary. Some local travel is expected.
