What is a metadata librarian?

Metadata librarians are information professionals who manage and organize metadata, which is data that describes other data, for library collections. They create, edit, and maintain metadata records to ensure resources are discoverable, accessible, and properly described in library catalogs and digital repositories. Their work supports searchability, digital preservation, and resource sharing by applying standards and best practices for cataloging. Metadata librarians often collaborate with IT staff, archivists, and subject specialists to enhance user access to library materials.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a metadata librarian?

To thrive as a Metadata Librarian, you need expertise in cataloging standards (such as MARC, Dublin Core), metadata schema, and information organization, usually supported by a Master's in Library Science or a related field. Familiarity with integrated library systems (ILS), metadata management tools, and knowledge of cataloging software like OCLC Connexion is typical. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and strong communication skills help ensure accuracy and facilitate collaboration with library staff. These skills and qualities are crucial to maintaining accessible, well-organized digital and print collections that support user discovery and research.

What are common challenges faced by professionals working in a metadata library role, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in a metadata library role often encounter challenges such as maintaining consistency and accuracy in metadata standards across diverse collections, keeping up with evolving cataloging guidelines, and integrating new technologies or platforms. Addressing these challenges typically involves ongoing training, collaboration with colleagues to develop clear metadata policies, and staying informed about industry best practices. Regular communication with IT teams and subject specialists is also key to ensuring that metadata effectively supports discoverability and access for library users.

Job description

AWS Elemental Inference is an AI-powered video understanding service that analyzes live and file-based video in real time, producing structured metadata that drives monetization, content transformation, and audience engagement at scale. The service delivers capabilities including intelligent video reframing, real-time highlight detection, automated subtitling, and contextual metadata for advertising workflows. Our customers today include the world's largest broadcasters, streaming platforms, and sports leagues. The core technology, real-time visual understanding at scale, is applicable to any domain where video carries signal that needs to be extracted and acted on.
We are looking for a Principal Product Manager to own the product strategy, roadmap, and commercial success of Elemental Inference. This is a single-threaded owner role. You will define what we build, why we build it, and how we bring it to market. You will work directly with applied scientists training video foundation models, engineers operating a real-time inference service, and customers running production workloads on it.
This role requires someone who can operate at the intersection of AI/ML product development and commercial execution. You will own the P&L, define pricing and packaging strategy, and drive adoption across a portfolio that spans AI inference, video monetization, and content intelligence. You will make trade-off decisions between expanding into new capabilities and verticals versus deepening quality and reducing cost on what exists today. You will represent Elemental Inference to AWS leadership, cross-org partners, and directly to customers.
Key job responsibilities
- Own the product strategy, roadmap, and P&L for Elemental Inference. Set pricing, define packaging, monitor revenue, and adjust GTM approach based on adoption data and customer feedback.
- Prioritize features based on customer requirements, revenue impact, competitive dynamics, and technical feasibility. Make explicit scope decisions between breadth (new capabilities, new verticals) and depth (quality, latency, cost).
- Partner with the applied science team on model roadmap decisions. Translate customer needs into science requirements and define the bar for production readiness.
- Drive cross-service integration with adjacent Elemental services (monetization, live encoding, VOD processing) to deliver end-to-end intelligent media workflows.
- Lead cross-org initiatives that span multiple AWS organizations, building alignment on joint product development where shared customer problems require coordinated solutions.
- Engage directly with strategic enterprise customers to validate product direction, close design partnerships, and drive adoption of launched features.
- Define and manage the partner ecosystem strategy for data dependencies (sports data providers, content licensing) that enable product capabilities.
- Identify and evaluate expansion opportunities where the core technology creates value in adjacent domains beyond the service's initial market.
- Represent Elemental Inference at industry events and with AWS leadership. Communicate product vision, competitive positioning, and business performance with clarity.
About the team
AWS Elemental provides the most comprehensive portfolio of media services in the cloud, purpose-built to prepare, process, deliver, and monetize video at global scale. We support technology that delivers outstanding viewing experiences to millions of viewers worldwide, from the largest live sporting events to 24/7 linear channels and on-demand libraries. Our customers include the world's leading broadcasters, streaming platforms, and sports leagues.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- 7+ years of working as a Technical Product Manager experience
- 5+ years of technical (software development, network development, IT, other related) experience
- Experience delivering large-scale SaaS, PaaS or LaaS products where you are responsible for the full product lifecycle, from concept through GTM (go to market)
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience in the media, video, streaming, or advertising technology industry
- Experience with real-time inference systems or video processing at scale
- Experience working directly with applied science or machine learning teams on model development decisions
