What are metadata librarians and what do they do?

Metadata librarians are information professionals who manage and organize metadata, which is data that describes other data, for library collections. They create, edit, and maintain metadata records to ensure resources are discoverable, accessible, and properly described in library catalogs and digital repositories. Their work supports searchability, digital preservation, and resource sharing by applying standards and best practices for cataloging. Metadata librarians often collaborate with IT staff, archivists, and subject specialists to enhance user access to library materials.

What is the difference between Metadata Library vs Metadata Specialist?

AspectMetadata LibraryMetadata Specialist
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in library science, information management, or related fieldsRequires similar credentials, often with additional certifications in data management or information systems
Work EnvironmentLibraries, archives, or information centers managing large metadata collectionsData-driven organizations, digital repositories, or information management teams
Employer & IndustryLibraries, museums, archives, academic institutionsTech companies, publishing, digital content providers
Search & Comparison IntentUnderstanding library metadata management rolesSpecialized data and metadata management tasks

The main difference is that a Metadata Library focuses on managing metadata within library and archival settings, while a Metadata Specialist handles metadata in broader digital and data environments. Both roles require similar credentials but serve different industry needs.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in a metadata library role, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in a metadata library role often encounter challenges such as maintaining consistency and accuracy in metadata standards across diverse collections, keeping up with evolving cataloging guidelines, and integrating new technologies or platforms. Addressing these challenges typically involves ongoing training, collaboration with colleagues to develop clear metadata policies, and staying informed about industry best practices. Regular communication with IT teams and subject specialists is also key to ensuring that metadata effectively supports discoverability and access for library users.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Metadata Librarian, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Metadata Librarian, you need expertise in cataloging standards (such as MARC, Dublin Core), metadata schema, and information organization, usually supported by a Master's in Library Science or a related field. Familiarity with integrated library systems (ILS), metadata management tools, and knowledge of cataloging software like OCLC Connexion is typical. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and strong communication skills help ensure accuracy and facilitate collaboration with library staff. These skills and qualities are crucial to maintaining accessible, well-organized digital and print collections that support user discovery and research.

We are seeking a highly skilled DevOps Engineer with an emphasis on cloud networking and secure connectivity to play a leading role in the design and implementation of a fully automated CI/CD ecosystem and Internal Developer Portal (IDP).
The ideal candidate began their career as a software developer and naturally gravitated toward cloud infrastructure, automation, and platform engineering. You are passionate about enabling engineering teams to build, test, and deploy software faster and more reliably through automation, self-service tooling, and well-architected cloud network foundations.
This role will be instrumental in building a scalable, secure, and performant cloud network and on-prem connectivity as well as contribute to the internal developer platform that standardizes software delivery across the organization, including network-aware CI/CD pipelines and integrated developer platform capabilities.CI/CD Platform Engineering
  • Design, implement, and maintain fully automated CI/CD pipelines for Java, .Net, and Node.js applications.

  • Build standardized deployment workflows across AWS and/or Azure environments.

  • Implement automated testing, security scanning, and quality gates within pipelines.

  • Establish reusable pipeline templates and shared libraries to enforce best practices.

  • Optimize build and deployment performance, reliability, and observability.

Internal Developer Portal (IDP)
  • Architect and implement an Internal Developer Portal to provide self-service infrastructure, application templates, and deployment workflows.

  • Enable "golden paths" for engineering teams to accelerate onboarding and reduce cognitive load.

  • Integrate IDP with CI/CD systems, cloud infrastructure, identity management, and observability platforms.

  • Maintain service catalogs, documentation standards, and ownership metadata.

  • Continuously improve developer experience through feedback and platform enhancements.

Cloud & Infrastructure Automation
  • Design and manage cloud infrastructure in AWS and/or Azure using Infrastructure as Code (Terraform required).

  • Build reusable Terraform modules and enforce governance through policy-as-code.

  • Implement secure, scalable networking and cloud-native architecture patterns.

  • Ensure high availability, scalability, and disaster recovery readiness.

DevOps & Platform Best Practices
  • Champion DevOps culture: automation-first mindset, continuous improvement, collaboration, and transparency.

  • Implement monitoring, logging, and alerting strategies for both infrastructure and applications.

  • Integrate DevSecOps practices including vulnerability scanning and secrets management.

  • Partner with development teams to improve reliability, performance, and deployment practices.

  • Lead Proof-of-Concept (PoC) initiatives to evaluate and introduce new tools, platforms, and automation processes.

What You Bring
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in software engineering, DevOps, cloud engineering, or platform engineering.

  • Demonstrated evolution from software development into cloud infrastructure and automation.

  • 6+ years of hands-on experience with CI/CD tools (e.g. Harness, CloudBees, Jenkins) and modern software delivery practices.

  • Deep development expertise in Java and/or Node.js application environments.

  • Strong hands-on experience in AWS and/or Azure, including networking, serverless and other managed cloud infrastructure.

  • Advanced proficiency with Terraform and Infrastructure as Code principles.

  • Experience designing scalable cloud-native architectures.

  • Experience leading technical evaluations and Proof-of-Concept (PoC) initiatives for new tools and processes.

  • Strong understanding of secure software delivery, git branching strategies, and DevSecOps practices.

  • Experience with containerization (Docker) and orchestration (Kubernetes preferred).

  • Strong scripting skills (Bash, Python, or similar).

  • Excellent collaboration skills with the ability to work cross-functionally across engineering, security, and operations teams.

  • Clear, transparent communication style with a bias toward documentation and shared ownership.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience building or implementing a commercial Internal Developer Portal (e.g., Harness IDP, Port, or similar).

  • Experience implementing platform engineering concepts and developer self-service models.

  • Familiarity with service mesh, API gateways, or cloud-native networking.

  • Experience implementing security automation and compliance guardrails.

  • Knowledge of observability platforms (Datadog, Prometheus, ELK, Cloud-native tools).

  • Experience in multi-cloud or hybrid cloud environments.

Education & Certifications
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related technical field.

  • AWS and/or Azure certifications (Professional-level preferred).

  • Additional certifications in DevOps, Kubernetes, or cloud technologies are a plus.

Key Traits We're Looking For
  • Builder mindset: You enjoy designing and building platforms from the ground up.

  • Developer-first thinking: You care deeply about developer experience.

  • Automation enthusiast: If it can be automated, you automate it.

  • Cloud-native architect: You think in scalable, resilient patterns.

  • Collaborative and transparent leader: You foster open communication, shared ownership, and strong cross-team collaboration.

Impact of This Role
  • Establish a standardized, fully automated CI/CD ecosystem.

  • Deliver a modern Internal Developer Platform that accelerates software delivery.
