How much do mems process engineer jobs pay per year?
What is a MEMS Process Engineer job?
A MEMS Process Engineer develops and optimizes microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) fabrication processes, typically in cleanroom environments. They work with deposition, etching, photolithography, and other semiconductor techniques to create tiny mechanical structures on silicon or other substrates. Their role involves process development, troubleshooting, and ensuring high-yield manufacturing. They collaborate with design, testing, and production teams to refine MEMS device performance.
What are some typical challenges faced by MEMS Process Engineers in their day-to-day work?
MEMS Process Engineers often encounter challenges such as maintaining process stability and yield in a highly controlled cleanroom environment, troubleshooting fabrication defects, and adapting to rapid technological changes. They must ensure rigorous quality control while consistently meeting tight specifications for device performance and reliability. Collaboration with design, test, and packaging teams is frequent, requiring clear communication and flexibility. Overcoming these challenges is a critical part of delivering innovative and high-quality MEMS products in a competitive market.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Mems Process Engineer position, and why are they important?
To thrive as a MEMS Process Engineer, you need a strong background in microfabrication, physics, materials science, and typically a degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with cleanroom protocols, lithography tools, etching systems, and process characterization equipment is essential. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and project management skills help you collaborate effectively and drive process improvements. These capabilities ensure precise device fabrication, efficient workflow, and successful integration of MEMS components in complex systems.

Job description
MIT Lincoln Laboratory's Microelectronics Laboratory is a 200mm wafer facility with commercial-class equipment serving national security and economic interests. The facility processes full-flows for a range of integrated circuit technologies including 90 nm fully depleted silicon-on-insulator CMOS, science grade CCD imagers, superconducting digital and quantum circuits, photonics, MEMs, and microfluidics.
The Microelectronics Laboratory is seeking a process engineer eager to apply their science or engineering skills in support of state-of-the-art superconducting circuits, quantum computing, radiation hardened electronics, charge-coupled imagers, and more.
As part of a Process Engineering team, the successful candidate will be responsible for developing, monitoring, maintaining, and improving base processes and capabilities for assigned tools. Focus tool areas include physical vapor deposition, epitaxy, and atomic layer deposition. Role could include wet chemical processing, plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition, wafer bonding, photolithography, reactive ion etch, and ion implantation depending on experience value. For the successful candidate's assigned tools, the person will
- be key unit process focal point coordinating and communicating with all affected areas, including operations, maintenance, and process integration teams,
- maintain and improve process capability, lot quality, and operations efficiency,
- define and implement statistical process control; respond to process shifts, excursions, misprocess events, and tool downs,
- coordinate with process integration owners and develop new unit process steps as needed,
- create and maintain required process procedures and documentation,
- work with maintenance to maintain and improve equipment performance and capability.
- BS degree in Electrical Engineering, Material Science, Chemical Engineering, Physics or related field.
- Enthusiasm for solving problems and a willingness to work in a cleanroom.
- Knowledge and experience in one or more of the following process areas is preferred: physical vapor deposition, epitaxy, atomic layer deposition, chemical vapor deposition (CVD), chemical mechanical polish (CMP), ion implantation, reactive ion etch, wet processing, thermal oxidation, lithography, silicon wafer thinning, or wafer bonding.
- 2+ years of experience in nanofabrication or microfabrication, preferably in a manufacturing environment.
- Working knowledge of microfabrication techniques, statistical process control, and design of experiments
- Skills and knowledge in microfabrication process integration, metrology, and quality management systems are highly valued.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work and interact effectively with a wide spectrum of people, including technicians, unit process engineers, technical staff, and specialists.
