What does a MEMS Engineer do?

A MEMS Engineer designs, develops, and tests micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) devices, which integrate mechanical and electrical components at a microscopic scale. They work on sensors, actuators, and other miniature technologies used in industries such as automotive, medical, and consumer electronics. Their role involves simulation, fabrication, testing, and optimization of MEMS devices to improve performance and reliability. Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, including material scientists and electrical engineers, is also a key aspect of their work.

What does a typical workweek look like for a MEMS Engineer?

A typical workweek for a MEMS Engineer involves a mix of hands-on fabrication in cleanroom facilities, simulation and modeling of device behavior, and working with cross-functional teams such as electrical, mechanical, and process engineers. You may spend time prototyping, characterizing MEMS devices using analysis equipment, and troubleshooting design or process issues. Regular meetings and collaboration with product development and quality assurance teams are common to ensure projects meet performance and reliability benchmarks. This dynamic environment offers continuous learning and the opportunity to see your work move from concept to production.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Mems Engineer position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a MEMS Engineer, you need a solid background in microfabrication, materials science, physics, and mechanical or electrical engineering, typically supported by a relevant bachelor's or master's degree. Familiarity with CAD tools, semiconductor processing equipment, cleanroom protocols, and software such as COMSOL Multiphysics or ANSYS is important, and industry credentials like Six Sigma certification can be beneficial. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication abilities set successful candidates apart. These skills are vital to ensure precision in design, troubleshoot complex devices, and effectively collaborate across multidisciplinary teams in fast-paced environments.

Candidate will be expected to offer creative insights and solutions for R&D problems, with direct responsibilities for developing new design concepts and architectures, modeling/simulation, characterization, design of experiments, data analysis, and written and oral presentations.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Layout and verification of new MEMS designs, process control monitors, and product revisions.
  • Build and maintain Cadence database of MEMS designs and circuit models.
  • Collaborate with foundry on all MEMS tape-out activities.
  • Develop and improve design rules and verification checks.
  • Support MEMS designers in various modeling assignments related to new technology and product development.
  • Provide direct oral and written communication updates regarding CAD and modeling activities.
  • Work independently and collaboratively, assist on assignments with other engineers as needed.

Requirements

Qualifications, Education, and Experience Required:

  • BS or MS degree in engineering, physics, or mathematics.
  • Experience using CAD tools for MEMS, IC, or PCB layout: Cadence Virtuoso Layout preferred.
  • Experience with Cadence tools for circuit simulation tools: ADE-L/XL, Maestro, Spectre, Virtuoso schematic.
  • Experience developing design rules and verification checks: Cadence DRC experience preferred.
  • Working knowledge of FEA simulation tools such as COMSOL & ANSYS is a plus.
  • Able to document procedures and methodologies for traceability.
  • Knowledge of semiconductor lithography and fabrication tools and processes is a plus.
  • MEMS experience is preferred.
  • Ideal candidate will possess strong traits of self-motivation, attention to detail, and the desire to contribute to leading edge technology.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and people skills are required.

Benefits
