How much do membrane protein jobs pay per hour?

As of Sep 15, 2026, the average hourly pay for membrane protein in the United States is $26.43, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $18.99 and $31.01 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are membrane proteins?

Membrane proteins are proteins that are part of, or interact with, the biological membranes of cells. They play crucial roles in various cellular processes such as signaling, transport of molecules, and maintaining the structure of the cell. These proteins can be found embedded within the membrane (integral) or attached to the membrane surface (peripheral). Because of their importance in cell function, membrane proteins are often targets for drugs and are studied extensively in biomedical research.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a membrane protein scientist?

To thrive as a Membrane Protein Scientist, you need a solid background in biochemistry, molecular biology, and protein chemistry, usually supported by a Ph.D. or relevant research experience. Expertise with techniques like X-ray crystallography, cryo-EM, mass spectrometry, and software for protein modeling is crucial. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication help you excel in both independent and collaborative research settings. These skills are essential to successfully investigate the structure and function of membrane proteins, which are vital for drug discovery and understanding cellular processes.

What are some common challenges faced by researchers working on membrane protein projects, and how can these be addressed?

Researchers working with membrane proteins often encounter challenges related to protein expression, purification, and structural characterization, as these proteins are typically unstable outside their native lipid environment. Solutions include optimizing expression systems, using detergents or nanodiscs for stabilization, and leveraging advanced methods like cryo-EM for structural studies. Team collaboration with experts in biochemistry, structural biology, and computational modeling can also help overcome technical hurdles and accelerate project progress.

What is the difference between Membrane Protein vs Cell Biologist?

AspectMembrane ProteinCell Biologist
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or related fields; lab experienceBachelor's or Master's in Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, or related fields; research experience
Work EnvironmentLaboratories focusing on protein isolation, structural analysis, and functional assaysResearch labs studying cell structure, function, and processes
Industry UsagePharmaceutical, biotech, academic researchAcademic, research institutions, biotech

Membrane Protein specialists focus on isolating, characterizing, and understanding proteins embedded in cell membranes, often working with biochemical and structural techniques. Cell Biologists study overall cell functions, including membrane components, but with broader research on cell processes. While both roles require similar educational backgrounds and lab skills, Membrane Protein roles are more specialized in protein analysis, whereas Cell Biologists have a wider focus on cell systems.

Job description

About Oxford Biotherapeutics:
Oxford Biotherapeutics is a clinical-stage biotechnology company focusing on the development of antibody therapeutics for the treatment of cancer.OBT'sOGAP-verify® platform is the world's largest, cancer specific, membrane protein library, directly measuring plasma membrane protein expression in patienttumors. OGAP is used to identifynovel, highlytumorspecific antigens for novel first-in-class ADC, T-cell Engager (TCE)and Chimeric Antigen Receptor (CAR-T) targets. Our lead asset, OBT076, is an Antibody Drug Conjugate (ADC) in Phase 1b clinical development. Our clinical and pre-clinical pipeline of novel biologics is balanced between internal programs, focused on ADCs and checkpoint regulators, and externally partnered programs with key innovators in oncology such asRoche,GSKand BMS.
Job Description
OBT is seeking an experienced, creative and motivated associate scientist to contribute to our company's Discovery Biologics Protein Science group. Work independently, and in a matrix, to lead the development of antigen antibodies against novel targets discovered by Oxford Biotherapeutics, headquartered in the UK. The successful candidate will be involved in multiple aspects of the production of recombinant proteins, monoclonal antibodies, multi-specific scaffolds, and novel protein modalities to enable all aspects of Early Discovery and Validation Research.
Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Be a contributor to the discovery and development of antibody therapeutics for oncology and immune oncology for novel targets.
  • Support recombinant protein and bi- and multi-specific antibody discovery plans (immunogen design, assay development, screening, and functional characterization methods)
  • Support biological discovery through different platforms of protein and antibody discoveries.
  • Responsible for various target projects to execute protein production, purification and antibody discovery/optimization in various platforms. Specifically, Produce and purify novel and logic-gated alternative format antibodies using mammalian expression systems utilizing an assortment of molecular biology & biochemical techniques (i.e. AKTA systems and other chromatographic columns).
  • Generate target over-expressing cell lines for antibody discovery work.
  • Develop strategies to express, purify, and analyze proteins for novel tumor targets expressed in mammalian cells.
  • Perform purification using AKTA/HPLC systems and maintain equipment.
  • Conduct antibody characterization of antibodies including binding affinity and binding kinetics through Octet/Biacore, epitope binning/mapping, and functional assays.
  • Troubleshoot experimental issues with guidance; contribute to process and assay transfers.
  • Mentor lower-level colleagues and assist in scientific optimization & development.
  • Analyze data, interpret results, identify problems, and develop trouble-shooting plans
  • Maintain accurate documentation and follow laboratory safety procedures.
  • Knowledge of the biologics drug discovery process and representation of the protein science function at project team meetings.
  • Compliances with data management, laboratory notebook policy, and laboratory safety.

Please note the roles and responsibilities for the position include but are not limited to the above
Required Qualifications and Skills:
  • PhD in biological sciences or a related field, including candidates who are completing or have recently completed their PhD, with demonstrated experience in relevant research areas; or MS with 5+ years; or BS with 8+ years of relevant experience in the biopharmaceutical industry or a closely related scientific discipline, preferably in a fast-paced biotech or startup environment.
