What is the difference between Membrane Engineer vs Process Engineer?

AspectMembrane EngineerProcess Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Chemical, Materials Science, or Mechanical Engineering; certifications varyBachelor's or Master's in Chemical, Mechanical, or Industrial Engineering; similar certifications
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, manufacturing plants, R&D facilitiesManufacturing plants, industrial facilities, R&D labs
Industry UsageWater treatment, desalination, gas separation, biomedical applicationsOil & gas, chemical processing, manufacturing, energy sectors

Membrane Engineers focus on designing and developing membrane technologies for separation processes, while Process Engineers optimize and manage overall manufacturing processes. Both roles require similar educational backgrounds and often work in overlapping environments, but their core responsibilities differ in scope and application.

What are some common challenges Membrane Engineers face when scaling up from lab-scale to industrial-scale membrane processes?

Membrane Engineers often encounter challenges related to membrane fouling, maintaining consistent performance, and ensuring cost-effective operation when scaling up from laboratory to industrial settings. Issues such as variations in feed water quality, larger system hydraulics, and the need for robust cleaning protocols become more pronounced at scale. Successful engineers collaborate closely with process engineers, maintenance teams, and quality control to troubleshoot and optimize systems for reliability and efficiency. Being proactive in addressing these challenges is key to the role and can lead to significant process improvements.

What are membrane engineers?

Membrane engineers are professionals who design, develop, and optimize membrane-based systems for applications such as water purification, gas separation, and chemical processing. They work with various membrane materials and processes to achieve efficient separation of substances at the molecular or ionic level. Membrane engineers often collaborate with chemists, material scientists, and process engineers to improve membrane performance and durability. Their expertise is crucial in industries like wastewater treatment, pharmaceuticals, food processing, and energy.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Membrane Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Membrane Engineer, you need a strong background in chemical engineering, materials science, or environmental engineering, often supported by a relevant degree and experience in membrane technology. Familiarity with simulation software (such as COMSOL Multiphysics), laboratory instrumentation, and industry standards or certifications like ISO 9001 is highly valuable. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help set candidates apart in this role. These competencies enable the development, optimization, and implementation of advanced membrane systems essential for water treatment, gas separation, and sustainable industrial processes.

Senior Lead Engineer UPW/WW - (Exentec)

Exyte GmbH

$103K - $142K/yr

Full-time

Posted 20 days ago

Job description

Discover your exciting role

The Senior Lead Engineer UPW/WW serves as Exentec's senior-most technical authority for high-purity water (UPW), RO/DI, reclaim/reuse, and industrial wastewater treatment (IWT) systems supporting semiconductor fabs, advanced manufacturing sites, and mission-critical data centers. This role provides deep technical leadership across design, system performance, operations, troubleshooting, reliability engineering, contamination prevention, and environmental compliance.
The Senior Lead Engineer UPW/WW establishes global engineering standards, leads complex investigations, ensures water quality and environmental stability, and provides high-level support for both facility expansions and high-volume daily operations. The role also interfaces with clients and supports new business pursuits by articulating Exentec's technical approach and capabilities.
Operating in a 247 environment, this position requires exceptional technical depth, rigorous quality discipline, and the ability to support global teams with urgency and precision.

Explore your tasks and responsibilities

Serve as the global Subject Matter Expert (SME) for:
o Ultra Pure Water (UPW)/RODI systems: MMF, RO, EDI, mixed beds, degas, TOC UV, sterilization UV, UF, distribution loops
o Industrial Waste Treatment (IWT) including acid/alkali neutralization, metals removal, oxidizers, ammonia treatment, biological systems, sludge handling
o Wastewater reclamation, including RO reclaim, microfiltration, and high-recovery water systems
Maintain Exentec's global engineering standards, design criteria, material specifications, FAT/SAT/commissioning protocols, and quality thresholds.
Review and approve designs, P&IDs, PFDs, process control strategies, analytical equipment selections, and hydraulic modeling.
Provide technical sign-off for modifications, system upgrades, MOC reviews, and energization/startup plans.
Own water quality standards and ensure compliance with client specifications and industry norms (ASTM DI/UPW, SEMI F063/F064, etc.).
Lead failure mode analysis, contamination investigations, abnormal water events, and system upsets.
Develop high-reliability strategies for UPW, RO/DI, and IWT infrastructure, including redundancy planning and critical component monitoring.
Oversee capacity planning, quality trending, response matrices, and predictive analysis.
Analyze SCADA/PLC data for performance optimization, membrane health, mixed bed performance, oxidation events, and reclaim variability.
Provide Tier-3 engineering support to global sites for complex water-related issues
Develop corrective actions, engineering countermeasures, and recovery plans for water quality deviations.
Support emergency response during critical water events affecting fab tools, environmental discharge, or facility uptime.
Ensure compliance with environmental permits, discharge limits, hazardous waste regulations, and chemical handling requirements.
Lead environmental risk assessments, spill response strategies, and incident investigations for water systems.
Establish safe procedures for chemical injection systems (antiscalant, SBS, caustic, acid, ferric, polymer, chlorine, UV, etc.).
