Your Impact:
Membership is one of the most important ways people connect with The Trustees and support our mission to protect and share Massachusetts' special places. As the Membership Engagement Associate, you will play a key role in growing and strengthening that connection by engaging visitors where they experience our mission firsthand-at reservations, events, and community gatherings across the Commonwealth.
As a visible ambassador for The Trustees, you will help visitors discover the value of membership and inspire them to become part of a community that supports conservation, public access, and cultural experiences throughout Massachusetts. Through meaningful conversations and exceptional customer engagement, you will contribute directly to membership growth and help ensure more people can connect with and support the places they love.
The Role:
Reporting to the Manager of Membership Engagement, the Membership Engagement Associate serves as a field-based representative of The Trustees' membership program. This highly interactive role combines visitor engagement, membership sales, event participation, and relationship building to expand membership acquisition efforts across the organization.
Working both independently and collaboratively, you will engage visitors in conversations about the impact and benefits of membership, support on-site membership sales activities, and represent The Trustees at events and community outreach opportunities. You will also provide valuable feedback from the field, helping inform membership strategies and improve the visitor experience.
Specifically, you'll be responsible for:
Membership Sales & Visitor Engagement
  • Represent The Trustees membership program at properties, events, and community engagement opportunities throughout Massachusetts.
  • Engage visitors in meaningful conversations about membership, tailoring messaging to individual interests and experiences.
  • Support on-site membership acquisition efforts and assist visitors with membership enrollment and related questions.
  • Accurately process memberships and ensure data is collected and recorded appropriately.
  • Serve as a welcoming and knowledgeable ambassador for The Trustees, delivering exceptional visitor experiences.

Property & Event Support
  • Participate in membership-focused events and outreach activities throughout the year, with increased field presence during peak visitation seasons.
  • Assist with maintaining membership sales materials, signage, and promotional resources at assigned properties.
  • Support the delivery of membership engagement initiatives in partnership with property teams and Membership staff.
  • Represent The Trustees at community events, partner programs, and other public-facing opportunities.

Collaboration & Continuous Improvement
  • Assist with the delivery of membership training and support resources for property-facing staff.
  • Share visitor feedback, membership trends, and observations from the field to help improve engagement strategies and visitor experiences.
  • Collaborate with Membership and property teams to support membership acquisition goals and organizational priorities.
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.

This is a full-time, exempt position (40 hours/week) reporting directly to the Manager of Member Engagement.
Requirements
What You'll Need:
Skills and Experience:
  • 3-5 years of experience in sales, customer service, visitor engagement, membership programs, fundraising, hospitality, or a related customer-facing role.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage comfortably with diverse audiences.
  • Confidence and enthusiasm for initiating conversations and promoting membership through in-person interactions.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and adapt to changing needs and environments.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to providing exceptional customer service.
  • Familiarity with Salesforce or other CRM systems preferred; ability to learn new systems quickly.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation with the ability to travel regularly throughout Massachusetts.
  • Availability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed to support events and visitor engagement activities.
  • Ability to work outdoors and remain active for extended periods during events and property visits.
  • Enthusiasm for The Trustees' mission and a genuine interest in conservation, outdoor recreation, and connecting people to special places.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.

Eligibility Criteria:
  • Current authorization to work in the United States - a candidate must have such authorization by his or her first day of employment.
  • A valid driver's license, as well as a satisfactory driving record as outlined in The Trustees' driving policy.
  • A satisfactory criminal background (CORI) check.

Don't quite have all the skills and experience listed above? We still want to hear from you! Research shows that historically marginalized groups are less likely to apply if they do not meet every single requirement.
