What is a medical support assistant at the VA?

Medical Support Assistants (MSAs) at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) are administrative professionals who play a vital role in supporting patient care. They handle scheduling appointments, managing patient records, answering phones, and assisting veterans with their healthcare needs. MSAs serve as the first point of contact for veterans in VA clinics and hospitals, ensuring efficient communication between patients and healthcare providers. Their work helps keep VA medical facilities running smoothly and provides essential support to veterans seeking care.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a medical support assistant at the VA?

To thrive as a Medical Support Assistant at the VA, you need strong administrative skills, attention to detail, and a high school diploma or equivalent, with preference for experience in healthcare settings. Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems like VistA/CPRS and scheduling software is typically required. Exceptional interpersonal communication, customer service, and multitasking abilities help you excel in patient-facing roles. These skills ensure efficient clinic operations, accurate record-keeping, and a positive experience for veterans seeking care.

What are common challenges medical support assistants at the VA face, and how can they overcome them?

Medical Support Assistants (MSAs) at the VA often manage high call volumes, handle sensitive patient information, and coordinate complex appointment schedules.
