Job description

SUMMARY Reports to the Program Manager, Provider Services in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Brown Health Medical Group. The Medical Scribe supports Emergency Department (ED) medical providers by accurately and confidentially documenting patient history, physical exams, and other components of the patient encounter in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR). This role operates in a fastpaced, highacuity clinical environment and plays a key part in supporting provider efficiency and patient throughput in the ED.

RESPONSIBILITIES Assists the Brown Health Medical Group (BHMG) team in the essential functions of documenting medical progress notes during visits to include medical history, assessment, treatment, and follow-up. Reviews the EMR input following the visit, verifying completeness and accuracy, ensuring that the input meets the standards of medical documentation for BHMG.

Adheres to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) to protect patient confidentiality and the patient's rights. Recognizes and reports problems, errors, and discrepancies in patient records to supervisor. Assists in any clerical areas of the department; may be assigned special projects as needed.

Retrieve prior patient records including, but not limited to, former EKGs, test results, and discharge summaries. Gather medical supplies as needed for various medical procedures performed in the ED. Attends internal/external meetings and/or trainings related to areas of responsibility; when necessary.

Scribes must maintain professional behavior when interacting with staff members, hospital employees, vendors, and others. BASIC KNOWLEDGE/REQUIREMENTS High school diploma or equivalent, plus two years' advanced education in medical terminology, anatomy, and secretarial science or equivalent work experience. Bachelor's Degree preferred, but not required.

Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients with consideration of aging processes, human development stages, and cultural patterns in each step of the care process. Works well in a professional, fast-paced setting. Interest in beginning or furthering a career in clinical medicine/healthcare.

Commitment of one year minimum. EXPERIENCE One year of experience with electronic medical records in a medical office, hospital, or other healthcare setting. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and/or other similar computer software.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Emergency department environment. Mild to moderate physical effort to perform basic clerical and typing duties. Some prolonged sitting and standing.

Any potential hazards are minimized by adherence to established safety procedures and precautions including use of safety equipment and protective clothing. May lift supplies up to 50 pounds.
