Position description

The University of California Davis, School of Medicine, Department of Radiation Oncology invites applications for a full-time faculty position in Therapeutic Medical Physics in the Health Sciences Clinical Professor series (HSCP). Academic rank and salary are commensurate with experience and qualifications. Faculty members in the HSCP series are primarily engaged in clinical care and are also expected to contribute to teaching, professional and university service, and scholarly or creative activities.

Qualified candidates must hold a Ph.D. in Medical Physics or a closely related field pertinent to medical physics and must be board certified or board eligible in Therapeutic Medical Physics by the American Board of Radiology (ABR) or an equivalent certifying body. For appointment at the Associate Professor level, candidates should demonstrate a record of clinical excellence and academic accomplishment appropriate to rank. Evidence of scholarly productivity, clinical innovation, program development, leadership, or participation in funded research is highly desirable.

The successful candidate will participate in advanced clinical programs and, depending on experience and interests, may provide leadership in areas including image-guided radiation therapy, IMRT and VMAT, SBRT, radiosurgery, brachytherapy, in vivo dosimetry, motion management, and clinical informatics infrastructure development. The successful candidate will also participate in the education of radiation oncology and medical physics residents and contribute to continuing education efforts for departmental staff.

The radiation oncology department is located within the UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center, an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in Sacramento, California. UC Davis has full-member status with the NRG-Radiation Therapy Oncology Group, an ACGME-accredited physician residency training program, and CAMPEP accreditation for our medical physics residency program. There are research affiliations with the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, UC Davis Department of Biomedical Engineering, Sutter Medical Foundation, and the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and other academic and clinical partners.

Our downtown Sacramento facility has two matched Elekta Versa HD linear accelerators, a TomoTherapy Radixact, and a Gamma Knife ICON all managed by the Elekta MOSAIQ EMR system. Treatment planning is performed with RayStation treatment planning system The UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center also maintains an active image-guided high-dose-rate (HDR) brachytherapy program with a dedicated special procedure suite located within the department. The suite includes a Samsung NeuroLogica mobile CT, an Elekta Flexitron afterloader, and the Oncentra Brachytherapy treatment planning system. The program treats a broad range of disease sites, including gynecologic, prostate, lung, and skin malignancies, and serves patients throughout Northern California and Nevada. The Department of Radiation Oncology is committed to providing advanced treatment delivery and image-guided technologies while supporting continued clinical innovation and program development.

Clinical Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will participate in the full range of clinical medical physics activities, including treatment planning support, treatment delivery, quality assurance, commissioning, dosimetry, and the safe use of external-beam radiation therapy systems and sealed radioactive sources. Depending on experience and program needs, the candidate may also contribute to specialized programs including stereotactic treatments, brachytherapy, Gamma Knife radiosurgery, motion management, and clinical technology development.

The successful candidate will be expected to meet applicable California regulatory requirements and, when eligible, join the California Department of Public Health, Radiologic Health Branch Approved List for relevant medical physics activities, including therapy machine calibration, radiation protection surveys, and radiation shielding design.

Teaching and Education:
Participation in education is expected of all medical physics faculty. The department offers a CAMPEP-accredited residency in clinical radiation therapy physics, and faculty participate in didactic instruction, clinical rotations, resident mentoring, and examinations. Each year, a lecture series in radiation therapy physics is offered to medical students, residents, and fellows on a wide range of topics in medical physics in accordance with curricula recommended by the American Board of Radiology and CAMPEP. Lecturers include faculty from Radiation Oncology, Radiology, Biomedical Engineering, the School of Veterinary Medicine, and other institutions. Additional teaching opportunities are available with radiation oncology residents, medical students, fellows, and other trainees.

Scholarship and Research:
This position is predominantly clinical and educationally focused; however, substantial opportunities exist for clinically applied research and scholarly activity. The department has an NIH grant for participation in NRG Oncology clinical trials. Areas of potential collaboration include motion management, adaptive radiation therapy, brachytherapy, automation and informatics, artificial intelligence, image guidance, quality and safety, and technology development. Faculty may also participate in cooperative-group clinical trials and collaborative research across UC Davis and affiliated institutions.

Leadership and Service:
Candidates should demonstrate effective communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary academic healthcare environment. Experience with quality improvement, clinical program development, committee service, professional societies, or other leadership activities is encouraged. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to a collegial, collaborative, and inclusive environment.
