Job description

Atlanta Legal Aid Society (โ€œLegal Aidโ€) seeks a Paralegal for its expanded Health and Disability Rights Unit. Our non-profit law firm represents low-income persons in a variety of civil legal matters including family, housing, consumer, public benefits, education and health law. This new unit combines our Health Law work for persons with HIV and AIDS, our Medical Legal Partnership with Grady Health Systems, and our Disability Integration Project for adults and children with significant disabilities who are in institutions or who are at risk of entering institutions and for whom we advocate to receive publicly funded home and community-based services (established by the Supreme Courtโ€™s decision in Olmstead v. L.C.), and support so they can live full lives in the community. The new unit will enable us to assist clients with a broader range of legal issues affecting their mental and physical health and well-being. The unit currently consists of an Interim Managing Attorney, three full-time staff attorneys, two part-time staff attorneys, two paralegals, and a grants coordinator. We envision hiring one or more staff attorneys to complete the expanded unit. The paralegal will work closely with a team of attorneys and support staff under the supervision of the unitโ€™s Managing Attorney. Work is performed at Grady Hospital, our Decatur office, and remotely per our hybrid policy.
Responsibilities:
  • Case intake and management, including answering the phone, conducting initial client intakes and interviews, gathering documentation, and presenting cases to the staff attorneys and at case acceptance meetings.
  • Represent clients at administrative hearings regarding public benefits or other health-related matters under the strict supervision of an attorney.
  • Data management, including entering information into Legal Aidโ€™s database and retrieving relevant data from hospital systems.
  • File management, including scanning documents into the client database, digital organization, filing, and archiving closed cases.
  • Organize data required for grants and assist in the preparation of periodic reports.
  • Coordinate administrative benefit troubleshooting and standard record-gathering to support unit-wide advocacy and efficient workflow.
  • Prepare reports for funders, medical staff, and unit leadership.
  • Provide clients with information and advice under the strict supervision of an attorney.
  • Review and summarize medical records for disability and health-related claims.
  • Assist attorneys with case investigation, document preparation, client communication, legal research, and organization, including trial binders.
  • Drafting client stories and performing general administrative tasks as assigned.
  • Other tasks as assigned.

Qualifications:
  • An undergraduate degree or paralegal certificate is preferred, but not required.
  • Previous experience in health law, disability rights, and poverty law is strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated commitment to public service and previous work with low-income people, with an appreciation for diversity, is strongly preferred.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with families, doctors, social workers, and hospital staff.
  • Strong work ethic and the adaptability required to navigate both legal and medical environments.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication, listening, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to balance compassion with pragmatism in a fast-paced setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a collaborative, hybrid team model.
  • Proficiency in Google Workspace and a willingness to learn new legal and medical data tools.
  • Must possess a current Georgia Notary Public commission or be willing and eligible to obtain one.
  • Proficiency in languages other than English, specifically Spanish, is highly valued.

Salary and Benefits:
  • This position offers a salary of $50,000, but may vary (up or down) depending on work experience. Salaries are reviewed annually and may be adjusted based on available funding.
  • Generous fringe benefits, including 16 paid holidays in 2026, 6 weeks of paid time off (accruing at 2.5 days per month), and 6 weeks of parental leave (12 weeks after one year).
