THE POSITION
ELAC announces an opening for a Journalism Instructor full-time tenure track faculty position beginning Fall 2026. This ten-month full-time assignment will include a wide variety of courses included in the College's Journalism program. Instructional assignments may include teaching at off-campus locations; day, evening, weekend, and online classes; and/or non-traditional scheduling of classes. The faculty member must be flexible to meet the needs of the department and its students which incorporate a variety of schedules for the Journalism discipline. In addition, the faculty member should have experience in teaching in an ethnically diverse college environment with sensitivity to the different learning needs of students. Interested individuals who possess the required training and experience are invited to submit applications.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• Master's in Journalism, or Communication with a specialization in Journalism; or
• Bachelor's in either of the above AND Master's in English, History, Communication, Literature, Composition, Comparative Literature, any Social Science, Business, Business Administration, Marketing, Graphics or Photography.
• Demonstrated cultural competency, sensitivity to, and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and staff.
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:
A medical certificate indicating fitness to engage in administrative work is required for new employees at the applicant's expense prior to employment.
Eligibility Requirement: COVID 19 VACCINATION
Pursuant to LACCD Board of Trustee's Policy 2900, all students and employees must be fully vaccinated and complete a baseline test or have an approved exemption. LACCD employees are required to provide their vaccination status in compliance with the LACCD Board of Trustees' policy. Newly hired employees will be required to provide their vaccination status prior to starting a position or, at the latest, by their position start date.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Commitment to East Los Angeles College's and the journalism department's goals and objectives including Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) to provide quality program services for students.
• Exhibit and express a commitment to maintain an up-to-date knowledge of recent developments in Journalism and related areas.
• An awareness of student and professional organizations which support and advance journalism.
• Knowledge and experience as a working journalist and in related fields.
• Experience in adult education and training.
• Ability to work effectively with students and colleagues on an individual basis and in group settings.
• Personal qualities to work effectively and sensitively in a multicultural student environment.
• Awareness and commitment to the special needs of non- traditional students.
• Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing.
• Experience and knowledge of the use of technology in and out of the classroom.
• An understanding of online journalism and broadcast as well as print media.
• Commitment to and understanding of journalism ethics and the ability to explain such issues to students.
Desirable qualifications:
- Master's or higher in Journalism or Communication Studies
- Experience with running/assisting in a Newsroom Environment;
- Evidence of successful in-person and online classroom experience at the community college or university level;
- Experience with developing and teaching courses online or using other distance-learning methodologies on a learning management system (Distance Education Certified);
- Experience in the development, assessment, and evaluation of student learning outcomes and demonstrated ability to utilize learning outcomes assessment results to improve instruction and instructional support programs;
- Demonstrated ability to employ a variety of teaching techniques and strategies to address the diverse learning needs of students;
- Experience designing and teaching curricula that incorporate best practices that are responsive to the needs and interest of under prepared and/or historically underrepresented students;
- Experience cultivating and identifying lower or zero cost textbook resources for Journalism Studies courses;
- Experience/ability to build partnerships across campus and across institutions to improve success of Journalism students;
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with first-generation college students using multi-modal approaches and student-centered pedagogy;
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in written English;
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with colleagues and students;
- Clear evidence of sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
SALARY AND BENEFITS
The current starting range is from $76,960 - $143,000 for the ten-month academic year depending on education and experience. The Ph.D. differential is $4,870 per academic year. The district provides an excellent benefits package including medical, vision, dental, and life insurance to the employee and eligible dependents.
