Job description

REVA is one of the largest fixed wing air ambulance operators globally and provides medical transport services on 24/7/365 continuous basis. Responsibilities of the Flight Nurse include evaluation, coordination, and delivery of medical care provided to patients during all phases of transport. Must be familiar with scope of practice of the transport team and the State rules and regulations in which the transport team operates. Works with the other transport team members to coordinate care of the patient during transport; once called, readily available/arrive at specified location, within 30 minutes before wheels.ย 

The following reflects managementโ€™s definition of essential functions for this job but does not restrict the tasks that may be assigned. Management may assign or reassign duties and responsibilities to this job at any time due to reasonable accommodation or other reasons. The flight nurse is responsible for completing the quarterly and annual requirements to maintain active flight status to include: completion of intubations quarterly, attendance at staff meetings, and annual: airway course, mock codes, annual online training program, safety and infection control, aircraft / personnel security briefing, equipment and supplies competency / currency validation, medical screening update, wellness form, EMS Rules and Regulations, and Haz-mat recognition and response.ย ย 

PRE-FLIGHT RESPONSIBILITIESย ย 

  • Obtains medicalย reportย from Medical Coordinator orย designee, to include addressing diseases affected by altitude. May obtain medical intake informationย at directionย of medical leadership or designee.ย ย 

  • Calls for updated patient medicalย reportย for the discharging facility / physician, if needed.ย 

  • Completesย pre-flight checklists.ย ย 

  • Assures medical equipment is accounted for, properly functioning, and securely stowed on theย aircraft.ย ย 

  • Familiar with location and use of equipment and supplies,ย to includeย all medications.ย ย 

  • Assuresย additionalย medical equipment / supplies are available for specific needs of theย patientย condition and needs, based on available patient report and distance of transport.ย ย 

  • Logs out controlled substance / narcotics box per policy.ย ย 

  • Communicates condition, acuity, and any unusual issues withย entireย transport team.ย ย 

  • Reviews dispatch sheer with Medical Coordinator and Flight Crew, noting any special instructions.ย 

  • Participates in pre-flight briefings with other members ofย team, including pilots.ย ย 

TRANSPORT RESPONSIBILITIESย ย ย 

  • Performs and documents a completeย head toย toe assessment of the patient (to include neuro, skin, HEENT, neck, chest, cardiac, abdominal, pelvis, GU, back, and extremities at a minimum.ย ย 

  • Assuresย patientย and passengers have allย appropriate documentation,ย i.e.ย passports, visas, before departure from the discharging facility.ย Callsย Dispatch if any uncertainty or questions as toย appropriatenessย of travel documents.ย ย 

  • Review release forms, waivers, DNR (whenย appropriate)ย to familyย memberย and/orย patient.ย ย 

  • Answersย questions and assures signatures are obtained prior to leavingย dischargingย facility.ย ย 

  • Safeguards medical records, X-rays, etc. per HIPAA regulations.ย ย 

  • Assistsย pilots as needed in baggage search for hazardous materials.ย ย 

  • Assures patients medical records andย personal belongingsย accompanyingย patient.ย ย 

  • Coordinates the transfer of the patient to theย aircraft,ย maintainingย continuity of care and insuringย patient,ย passengers, and belongings are secured.ย ย 

  • Assures compliance withย minimumย standardsย patient care requirements - see policy.ย ย 

  • Provides orientation and mentoring for new program/flight crew members,ย medicalย and aviation.ย 

  • Continuously monitors and documents patientโ€™s condition to include, but not limited to, head to toe assessment with updates, vital signs, continuous cardiac monitoring, and pulse oximetry, including documentation of cabin pressures hourly, treatment / interventions / medications performed, with responses noted, and pain scale 1 to 10 out of 10 noted with vital sign assessment. Completes medical record documentation, including demographics and signatures.ย 

  • Assures completion ofย Physicianโ€™sย Order form and completes the controlled substance inventory control form.ย 

  • Assures adherence to universal precautions andย initiatesย additionalย precautionsย deemedย necessary byย disease specificย diagnosis and/or signs and symptoms.ย ย 

  • Communicates changes inย patientโ€™sย condition toย Medical Coordinator, Resource Manager andย Medical Directorย as needed. Initiates flight schedule changes according to patient condition changes, keepingย MC, RM andย Medical Director as well asย Dispatchย informed of these changes. Any change in patient condition requiring contacting outside agencies must first be approved byย Resource Manager andย Medical Director orย designee, as well asย Dispatch and Operations team.ย 

NICU Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide comprehensive neonatal critical care during fixed-wing and ground transports.
  • Perform advanced neonatal assessments and develop appropriate treatment plans.
  • Stabilize critically ill and premature infants prior to and during transport.
  • Administer medications, blood products, and IV fluids in accordance with protocols and physician direction.
  • Operate and troubleshoot specialized neonatal transport equipment including:
    • Transport incubators
    • Mechanical ventilators
    • High-frequency ventilators (when applicable)
    • CPAP systems
    • Cardiac monitors
    • Infusion pumps
    • Nitric oxide delivery systems (if applicable)
  • Perform neonatal airway management including endotracheal tube monitoring and assistance with advanced airway procedures.
  • Monitor ventilated neonates and make ventilator adjustments per protocol.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and case reviews.
  • Ensure compliance with FAA regulations, CAMTS standards, company policies, and clinical protocols.
  • Participate in continuing education, competency assessments, simulation training, and mandatory flight safety programs.
  • Maintain readiness of aircraft medical equipment and supplies.
  • Assist with inventory management and equipment inspections.

Qualificationsย

  • Current BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP, PHTLSย

  • Valid Passport with no restrictions to travel to/from and within the U.S. and foreign countries/ territories that the position isย requiredย to travel.ย
