Job description

VETERINARY TECHNICIAN

VETERINARY / LABORATORY TECHNICIAN (FULL-TIME) Duties: Under general supervision, the Veterinary Technician is responsible for providing direct assistance to the Zoo Director, Animal Care Supervisor, Veterinarians, Curators, and Keepers in relation to medical care for the Zoo's animal collection. This individual will assist in medical, surgical, and necropsy procedures, conduct lab work, order medications and supplies, perform clinical pathology and imaging procedures, monitor patients and maintain medical records.

In addition, they will perform a variety of administrative functions to include producing required reports, attending meetings, filing records, and providing input/generating department standard operating procedures pertaining to hospital maintenance/quarantine/pre-shipment procedures. Prepare monthly schedule of which animals the Veterinarian will care for on their visits. This position reports to the Animal Care Supervisor and Zoo Director. Minimum Training and Experience

  • Completion of a two-year, approved Veterinary Technology program.
  • Minimum of 3 years postgraduate, clinical experience preferred.
  • At least 1 year of experience in a zoological collection preferred.
  • Must have National Certification and be able to obtain registration in the State of Mississippi within 12 months of the start of employment.
  • Must be current on rabies vaccinations, have a current negative TB test.
  • Must have a valid drivers' license.
  • Must be at least 21+ years of age. Ability: Working knowledge of the occupational hazards involved in the work and the proper safely precautions for the safe performance of the job. Ability to interpret involved laboratory reports from the other labs. Knowledge of medical terminology, veterinary anatomy and physiology. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Skill in using basic laboratory analysis including metric system use. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations as necessitated by work assignment. Skill in the use and care of laboratory equipment including x-ray unit, isoflurane and oxygen machine, centrifuge, microscope, incubator, oxygen unit, autoclave, and balance scales. Sufficient manual dexterity to develop skill in the care and use of tools, equipment and facilities used in the work.
