MEDICAL ASSISTANT

Job Title: Medical Assistant

Department: Varies

Reports to: Practice Manager

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt (Hourly)

Job Summary:

The Medical Assistant provides clinical and administrative support to physicians and healthcare providers in a medical office setting. This role is responsible for assisting with patient care, performing routine clinical tasks, and ensuring efficient daily office operations while maintaining patient confidentiality and a high standard of care.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Clinical Duties

  • Prepare patients for examinations by taking vital signs, recording medical histories, and documenting chief complaints
  • Assist physicians with examinations, treatments, and minor procedures
  • Administer injections and medications as directed by the physician
  • Collect and prepare laboratory specimens, perform basic lab tests, and ensure proper handling
  • Perform EKGs, phlebotomy, wound care, and dressing changes as needed
  • Manage exam rooms by cleaning, stocking supplies, and maintaining equipment
  • Ensure compliance with infection control and safety protocols

Administrative Duties

  • Schedule patient appointments and manage follow-up visits
  • Verify patient information, insurance, and referrals
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the electronic health record (EHR)
  • Handle phone calls, patient inquiries, and prescription refill requests
  • Coordinate communication between patients, providers, and external facilities
  • Assist with billing, coding, or prior authorizations as needed

  • Knowledge of medical terminology, clinical procedures, and office operations
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Completion of Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), Registered Medical Assistant (RMA), or equivalent certification within 6 months from the date of hire at which time the employee would be re-classified as a Medical Assistant II

Preferred

  • Previous experience in a physician office or outpatient clinic
  • Experience using electronic health records (EHR/EMR systems)
