What is medical assistant certification?

Medical Assistant Certification is a credential awarded to individuals who have demonstrated the knowledge and skills necessary to perform the duties of a medical assistant. Certification is typically obtained by passing an exam from an accredited certifying organization, such as the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) or the National Healthcareer Association (NHA). Becoming certified can enhance job prospects, demonstrate professionalism, and may be required by some employers or states. It also signifies that the individual is committed to maintaining high standards of patient care and medical office procedures.

What are some common challenges faced by newly certified medical assistants in their first year on the job?

Newly certified medical assistants often experience challenges such as balancing administrative duties with clinical responsibilities, adapting to the fast pace of medical offices, and becoming comfortable with electronic health record (EHR) systems. They may also need to quickly develop strong communication skills to interact effectively with patients and healthcare providers. Ongoing support from experienced team members and a willingness to ask questions can help ease the transition and build confidence in this multifaceted role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a medical assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Medical Assistant, you need a solid understanding of clinical procedures, administrative tasks, and patient care, typically supported by completion of a Medical Assistant Certification program. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR) systems, basic laboratory equipment, and medical billing software is commonly required. Strong interpersonal communication, attention to detail, and professionalism help Medical Assistants build trust with patients and work effectively with healthcare teams. These competencies ensure efficient, high-quality patient care and smooth operation of medical offices or clinics.

Job description

  • Are you a detail-oriented Certified Medical Assistant who takes pride in keeping a busy clinic running smoothly and every patient encounter on track?
  • Do you enjoy being the steady hand behind the scenes - rooming patients, capturing vitals, running point-of-care tests, and making sure providers have everything they need to deliver great care?
  • Are you looking to put your clinical skills to work for an organization whose mission genuinely changes lives across Central Indiana?

If you answered yes, we invite you to explore the Certified Medical Assistant opportunity with Team Damien!
About Damien Center
Founded in 1987, Damien Center is Indiana's oldest and largest AIDS service organization, serving more than 8,000 individuals living with or at risk for HIV. Guided by the values of Dignity, Collaboration, Accountability, Access, Quality, and Innovation, our team delivers care coordination, clinical and pharmacy services, mental health support, housing, and nutrition programs to build a trusted, comprehensive home for care.
The Role
As our Certified Medical Assistant, you'll be a key member of the care team, supporting efficient, patient-centered clinical operations. You'll facilitate patient flow, perform clinical intake and routine testing, and support providers and nursing staff so every visit runs smoothly. Working within our Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH) model, you'll help keep the clinic visit-ready so licensed staff can focus on assessment, care planning, and treatment.
What You'll Do
  • Room patients and complete clinical intake (vitals, history, medications, screenings)
  • Perform CLIA-waived tests and point-of-care diagnostics (EKG, urinalysis, glucose, pregnancy testing)
  • Collect and process lab specimens, including phlebotomy (if certified)
  • Administer vaccines/injections and assist providers during exams and procedures
  • Coordinate medication pickups with our in-house pharmacy and manage patient flow
  • Document accurately in the EMR and support quality/compliance metrics

Required Qualifications
  • Medical Assistant certification or diploma required.
  • Current CPR/BLS certification required.
  • Proficiency using Electronic Health Records (EHR).
  • At least 3 years of ambulatory/outpatient primary care experience.

Compensation & Benefits
This is an hourly, full-time, non-exempt position reporting to the Clinic Manager, with a starting rate of $25.50/hour.
  • 150 hours of PTO in year one, increasing to 195 hours per year moving forward, plus 12 paid holidays.
  • Medical (PPO or HDHP), dental, and vision plans, with HSA or FSA and Dependent Care FSA options.
  • 403(b) retirement account with 5% matching and 100% vesting after 90 days.
  • Life insurance at 2x annual salary, plus voluntary life insurance for spouses and children.
  • Short- and long-term disability plans and an Employee Assistance Program.
  • Premium subscription to the Calm app for stress and mental health support.
  • Professional development opportunities and tuition assistance.
  • Annual performance review with an annual performance-based salary increase.
