How much do mechanical structural engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 22, 2026, the average yearly pay for mechanical structural engineer in the United States is $103,463.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $81,000.00 and $122,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mechanical Structural Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mechanical Structural Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical engineering principles, structural analysis, and a relevant engineering degree, often supported by a Professional Engineer (PE) license. Proficiency in CAD software (such as AutoCAD or SolidWorks), finite element analysis (FEA) tools, and project management systems is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication skills are essential soft skills in this role. These skills ensure the safe, efficient, and innovative design and analysis of structures, which is critical for project success and public safety.

What engineers make $300,000 a year?

Senior mechanical structural engineers with extensive experience, advanced skills in design and analysis, and often working in specialized industries such as aerospace, oil and gas, or defense can earn $300,000 or more annually. Achieving this level typically requires advanced degrees, professional certifications, and leadership responsibilities.

What are the typical challenges Mechanical Structural Engineers face when working on multidisciplinary projects?

Mechanical Structural Engineers often collaborate with architects, electrical engineers, and construction teams, which can present challenges in aligning design specifications and project timelines. Balancing structural integrity with aesthetic and functional requirements requires strong communication and problem-solving skills. Additionally, integrating new materials or technologies may demand continuous learning and adaptability to evolving industry standards. Navigating these complexities is essential for successful project delivery and professional growth.

What does a structural mechanical engineer do?

A structural mechanical engineer designs and analyzes mechanical systems that support or interact with structural components, such as HVAC, piping, and equipment installations. They use engineering principles, CAD software, and industry standards to ensure safety, efficiency, and compliance in building and infrastructure projects.

What engineers make $500,000?

Senior-level mechanical structural engineers with extensive experience, specialized skills, and often working in high-paying industries such as aerospace, defense, or oil and gas can earn $500,000 or more annually. Achieving this level typically requires advanced certifications, leadership roles, and working in organizations with large budgets and complex projects.

Can you make $500,000 as a civil engineer?

Mechanical structural engineers typically earn high salaries, but reaching $500,000 annually is uncommon and usually requires extensive experience, specialized skills, management roles, or working in high-cost-of-living areas. Most salaries for this role fall below that threshold, with top earners sometimes exceeding $150,000 to $200,000 annually. Achieving such a high income often involves additional certifications, leadership positions, or consulting work.

What is the difference between Mechanical Structural Engineer vs Mechanical Design Engineer?

AspectMechanical Structural EngineerMechanical Design Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Mechanical or Civil Engineering, PE license (optional)Bachelor's or Master's in Mechanical Engineering, Professional Engineer (PE) license (optional)
Work EnvironmentConstruction sites, structural analysis, project managementProduct development, CAD design, manufacturing facilities
Industry UsageConstruction, infrastructure, structural projectsConsumer products, machinery, automotive, aerospace

Mechanical Structural Engineers focus on designing and analyzing structural components for buildings and infrastructure, often working on-site or in structural analysis. Mechanical Design Engineers primarily develop and optimize mechanical systems and products using CAD software, working mainly in design offices or manufacturing settings. While both roles require strong engineering credentials, their work environments and project types differ significantly.

What does a Mechanical Structural Engineer do?

A Mechanical Structural Engineer is responsible for designing, analyzing, and testing the structural components of mechanical systems to ensure they can withstand various stresses and loads. They often work on projects such as bridges, buildings, machinery, and vehicles, making sure that all mechanical structures are safe, efficient, and compliant with relevant codes and standards. Their work involves collaborating with other engineers, creating detailed design drawings, and performing simulations and calculations to predict structural behavior.
