Job description
Join Microsoft Devices Operations (MDO) and help shape the physical products millions use every day. The Strategic Sourcing team in Redmond, WA sits at the intersection of design, engineering, manufacturing, and supplier strategy-turning bold ideas into scalable, high-quality hardware experiences. We build resilient supply chains, unlock supplier innovation, and deliver technologies that define the look, feel, durability, and performance of our devices.
As a Sourcing Engineer II on the Mechanical Sourcing team, you will lead sourcing strategy for complex mechanical components and assemblies in our Surface & Xbox products while influencing product architecture, design decisions, supplier selection, cost, quality, and manufacturability from concept through launch. This is not a transactional procurement role-it is a cross-functional, technical, strategic role where you will partner with engineering, design, operations, finance, and suppliers to solve hard problems, make smart tradeoffs, and bring innovative hardware to market.
We are looking for curious, driven, collaborative builders who thrive in ambiguity, communicate clearly, and want to grow through meaningful ownership and technical depth. You will join an inclusive, growth-minded culture and work with world-class teams and suppliers to create products that matter.
Microsoft's mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. As employees we come together with a growth mindset, innovate to empower others, and collaborate to realize our shared goals. Each day we build on our values of respect, integrity, and accountability to create a culture of inclusion where everyone can thrive at work and beyond.
Responsibilities
- Develop sourcing strategy for high-impact mechanical and enclosure technologies used across Surface and Xbox-bringing market insight, supplier intelligence, cost modeling, and business judgment together to build a competitive supply base.
- Own strategic supplier relationships for critical mechanical categories, including executive engagement, commercial strategy, negotiations, agreements, and long-term partnership development.
- Unlock supplier innovation by developing supplier capabilities, creating roadmap visibility, and connecting emerging technologies to Microsoft hardware needs.
- Build resilient supply chains that protect continuity of supply, improve geographic and supplier flexibility, and help Microsoft navigate product ramps, market shifts, and supply disruptions.
- Secure technology and cost advantage by ensuring the right components, capacity, supplier readiness, and commercial structure are in place when Microsoft needs them.
- Drive confident cost decisions by developing sharp cost projections, should-cost models, and fact-based negotiation positions that can stand up to scrutiny and competitive alternatives.
- Find and capture cost opportunities by identifying component cost drivers, challenging assumptions, and partnering with suppliers and engineering to optimize cost without compromising quality or performance.
- Deliver measurable business results across total cost, supply continuity, quality, compliance, and on-time execution-helping Microsoft bring great hardware products to market with confidence.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Business, Supply Chain Management, Engineering, Materials Science, or related field AND 1+ year(s) experience in procurement, supply chain, sourcing, engineering, operations, or relevant sales-related roles.
- OR Bachelor's degree in Business, Supply Chain Management, Engineering, Materials Science, or related field AND 2+ years experience in procurement, supply chain, sourcing, engineering, operations, or relevant sales-related roles.
- OR equivalent experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience developing sourcing strategies for mechanical components, enclosures, assemblies, or related hardware technologies in a high-volume product environment.
- Master's degree in Business, Supply Chain Management, Engineering, Materials Science, or related field AND 3+ years experience in procurement, supply chain, sourcing, engineering, operations, or relevant sales-related roles
- OR Bachelor's degree in Business, Supply Chain Management, Engineering, Materials Science, or related field AND 5+ years experience in procurement, supply chain, sourcing, engineering, operations, or relevant sales-related roles
- OR equivalent experience.
- Solid technical curiosity and ability to engage deeply with engineering, design, manufacturing, and supplier teams to understand product architecture, tradeoffs, and manufacturability.
- Demonstrated capability in supplier selection, commercial negotiations, cost modeling, capacity planning, and long-term supplier relationship management.
- Ability to use data, market intelligence, and structured problem solving to make clear recommendations in ambiguous or fast-moving situations.
- Solid communication and influencing skills, with the confidence to align cross-functional partners and present tradeoffs, risks, and recommendations to leadership.
- Experience driving cost, quality, continuity of supply, or supply-base resiliency improvements through collaboration with suppliers and internal stakeholders.
- Growth mindset, ownership mentality, and a desire to learn across technical, commercial, and operational domains.
