Balancing these perspectives requires strong organizational skills and the ability to mediate solutions that satisfy quality, cost, and delivery requirements. Successful managers foster a culture of teamwork and continuous improvement to address these challenges and maintain smooth operations.

What does a Mechanical Operations Manager do?

A Mechanical Operations Manager oversees the daily operations and maintenance of mechanical systems within a facility or manufacturing environment. Their responsibilities typically include managing teams of technicians or engineers, ensuring equipment runs efficiently, scheduling maintenance, and implementing safety protocols. They also coordinate with other departments to optimize processes and may be involved in budgeting and procurement of mechanical equipment. The role requires strong leadership, technical expertise, and problem-solving skills to ensure operational efficiency and minimize downtime.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mechanical Operations Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mechanical Operations Manager, you need a solid background in mechanical engineering, operations management, and team leadership, typically supported by a bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with project management software, maintenance management systems (CMMS), and industry-specific certifications like PMP or Six Sigma are highly valued. Strong communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills enable effective coordination and motivation of cross-functional teams. These skills and qualifications are crucial for ensuring efficient operations, minimizing downtime, and achieving organizational goals within mechanical systems environments.

What is the difference between Mechanical Operations Manager vs Mechanical Engineer?

Job description

Our vision is to transform how the world uses information to enrich life for all.
Micron Technology is a world leader in innovating memory and storage solutions that accelerate the transformation of information into intelligence, inspiring the world to learn, communicate and advance faster than ever.
Our Opportunity Summary:
For more than 43 years, Micron Technology, Inc. has redefined innovation with the world's most advanced memory and semiconductor technologies. We're an international team of visionaries and scientists, developing groundbreaking technologies that are transforming how the world uses information to enrich life.
  • Support the U.S. Expansion Construction team responsible for delivering high-tech, large-scale semiconductor manufacturing facilities in the United States.
  • Coordinate the non-wet mechanical systems for Micron's New York manufacturing facility, encompassing process ventilation, HVAC systems, cleanroom make-up air handling, and related infrastructure.
  • Collaborate alongside firms that develop, contractors, vendors, and internal collaborators to guarantee dry mechanical systems meet project specifications, performance standards, safety requirements, and regulatory expectations.
  • Transition from construction and commissioning support into the New York operations engineering organization, supporting sustaining engineering and operational readiness after project completion.
  • This role is encouraged to be 100% on-site at the project site. Relocation to the project location is required.

(Disclaimer) While you may not exhibit all of the characteristics/skills listed below today, we are highly interested in a team member who is anxious to grow in both technical breadth and depth. If you are open to learning from and being a valued member of a team of seasoned engineers, we are eager to help build on your existing foundation and expand your individual and collaborative skills in this exciting and unique opportunity.
What's Encouraged Daily:
  • Coordinate third-party firms in building dry mechanical systems, including industrial ventilation, filtration units, emission control apparatus, cleanroom HVAC, make-up air handling, fan filter units, and related mechanical infrastructure.
  • Review and validate engineering work, including P&IDs, equipment specifications, system arrangements, three-dimensional representations, compose standards, construction specifications, and operational requirements.
  • Evaluate dry mechanical system designs for flow rates, velocities, pressures, friction losses, thermal performance, constructability, maintainability, safety, and reliability.
  • Collaborate with external design teams, contractors, vendors, quality teams, and internal stakeholders to align system designs with facility requirements, project schedules, and operational needs.
  • Support design integration with adjacent facility systems, including chilled water, ultra-pure water, chemical systems, gas systems, controls, and cleanroom infrastructure.
  • Use BIM and design coordination tools such as Revit and Navisworks to support clash detection, design reviews, and cross-functional system integration.
  • Support commissioning, testing, equipment validation, system startup, and turnover activities to confirm dry mechanical systems are prepared for operations.
  • Ensure dry mechanical system designs and installations align with applicable safety, environmental, building code, and regulatory requirements, including OSHA, EPA, International Mechanical Code, International Fire Code, ASHRAE, SMACNA, and AHRI standards.

How To Qualify:
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a related technical rigor.
  • Demonstrated ability in dry mechanical engineering, HVAC engineering, process exhaust systems, cleanroom mechanical systems, or related industrial facility systems.
  • Experience reviewing engineering work you're doing such as P&IDs, specifications, system layouts, 3D models, and construction documentation.
  • Working knowledge of dry mechanical systems used in semiconductor, industrial, high-tech manufacturing, pharmaceutical, data center, or other technically complex facilities.
  • Strong communication, problem-solving, and project coordination skills with the ability to work effectively with design firms, contractors, vendors, and internal teams.

What Sets You Apart:
  • Experience supporting semiconductor manufacturing facilities, cleanrooms, or other high-volume manufacturing environments involving intricate mechanical systems that operate without fluids.
  • Experience overseeing third-party design firms or managing design review processes for cleanroom HVAC, make-up air handling, process exhaust, scrubbers, abatement equipment, or related systems.
  • Familiarity with BIM workflows, clash detection, Revit, Navisworks, AutoCAD, PLC systems, SCADA systems, or mechanical controls integration.
  • Knowledge of sustainable design practices, energy-efficient HVAC systems, cleanroom airflow optimization, and applicable energy codes.
  • Professional certifications or advanced credentials such as PE, LEED AP, CPD, or similar technical certifications.
