While both roles require engineering backgrounds and CAD skills, Mechanical Integration Engineers focus on combining mechanical components into complete systems, ensuring they work seamlessly. Mechanical Design Engineers primarily develop individual components and assemblies. Both roles are essential in product development but differ in their core responsibilities and focus areas.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mechanical Integration Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mechanical Integration Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical engineering principles, systems integration, and typically a bachelor's degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering. Familiarity with CAD software (such as SolidWorks or CATIA), product lifecycle management (PLM) systems, and relevant industry certifications are highly valued. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills make a candidate stand out in this role. These competencies are crucial for ensuring that complex mechanical systems are seamlessly integrated and function reliably within larger projects.

What are some common challenges Mechanical Integration Engineers face when coordinating with cross-functional teams during a project?

Mechanical Integration Engineers often work closely with electrical, software, and manufacturing teams to ensure all components fit and function together seamlessly. One common challenge is aligning differing timelines, priorities, and technical requirements between teams, which can lead to integration delays or design conflicts. Strong communication and project management skills are crucial to proactively identify potential issues and facilitate effective collaboration. Being adaptable and solution-oriented helps in navigating these complexities to deliver a successful integrated product.

What does a Mechanical Integration Engineer do?

A Mechanical Integration Engineer is responsible for assembling, testing, and validating mechanical systems, ensuring that all components fit and function together as intended. They work closely with design, manufacturing, and quality teams to integrate subsystems into a final product, troubleshoot issues, and verify compliance with technical specifications. Their role often involves hands-on work, use of CAD software, and collaboration across disciplines to deliver reliable and efficient mechanical solutions.

Job description

Job#: 3037675
Job Description:
Integration Engineer
Location: Onsite: Raleigh, NC; Charlotte, NC; Winston-Salem, NC; Richmond, VA; Atlanta, GA
Role Overview
The Integration Engineer is responsible for designing, building, and sustaining the interfaces that connect the Service-Aware Operating Model to the broader enterprise technology ecosystem. This role enables reliable movement of configuration, telemetry, event, and operational data between platforms. The Integration Engineer specializes in external connectivity, data movement, transformation, and resilience across system boundaries, contributing to a large-scale initiative to transition to a service-centric, machine-readable operating model.
Key Responsibilities
  • * Develop and maintain APIs, connectors, transformation logic, and message handling capabilities. * Map and translate source data into governed service, configuration, and operational models. * Enable ingestion of alerts, events, telemetry, and inventory signals required for service visibility. * Apply software engineering rigor to integration development through version control, testing, and pipeline automation. * Monitor integration health, identify failure patterns, and improve recovery mechanisms. * Partner with adjacent engineering teams to address throughput, latency, and reliability issues.
  • Design and implement bidirectional integrations between the platform and external systems that contribute data, events, or workflow triggers.
  • Establish patterns for reliable data exchange across cloud, infrastructure, monitoring, asset, and operational platforms.
Required Qualifications
  • Extensive experience in integration engineering, API development, or backend systems engineering.
  • Strong proficiency in modern integration patterns, data transformation, and resilient interface design.
  • Experience connecting enterprise platforms using APIs, middleware, scripted integrations, or event-driven patterns.
  • Proven ability to build scalable, observable, and supportable integrations in complex, large enterprise-level environments.
  • Experience with ServiceNow integrations, including core products like CMDB, CSDM, Discovery, ITSM, ITOM, and Service Mapping.
Preferred Qualifications
  • A Bachelor's Degree is preferred.
  • Experience supporting service-centric or Service-Aware operating models.
  • Familiarity with event streaming, telemetry pipelines, and operational data integration.
  • Background in highly regulated or high-availability environments, such as banking.
  • Relevant engineering or integration certifications.
  • Experience from environments other than solely system integrators or implementers.
Work Environment
This position is part of a new, large team focused on platform and automation work. The team culture emphasizes urgency and a focus on outcomes. Candidates will be local to one of the following locations: Raleigh, Charlotte, Atlanta, Wilson, or Richmond.
