What does a mechanical engineering intern do?

As a mechanical engineering intern, you prepare calculations and reports, gain experience with engineering systems, integrate tracking plans, and perform analysis of mechanical design choices. You may help test products, interact with various members of a project team, and create or modify CAD models. As an intern, your responsibilities are limited, and most employers consider gaining experience to be the most important part of your job. Many mechanical engineering interns focus on building professional relationships in the hope of landing a permanent job after graduating. You may need to develop your skills in engineering, CAD software, and prototyping during your internship.

What does a mechanical engineering intern do?

A Mechanical Engineering Intern assists engineers in designing, developing, and testing mechanical devices and systems. They typically work on tasks such as creating CAD drawings, conducting research, performing calculations, and helping with prototype assembly or testing. Interns gain hands-on experience by supporting ongoing projects and collaborating with other engineers and technicians. This role provides valuable exposure to real-world engineering challenges and helps students apply their academic knowledge in a practical setting.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mechanical engineering intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mechanical Engineering Intern, you need a solid grasp of engineering fundamentals, problem-solving abilities, and coursework in mechanical design or analysis, often supported by progress toward a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with CAD software (such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD), simulation tools, and basic lab equipment is typically required. Strong communication, teamwork, and a willingness to learn help interns adapt quickly and contribute effectively to projects. These skills and qualities are important to ensure interns can support engineering teams, apply theory to real-world challenges, and grow within the profession.

What types of projects do mechanical engineering interns typically work on, and how much hands-on experience can I expect?

As a Mechanical Engineering Intern, you'll often assist with a mix of design, analysis, and testing projects under the guidance of experienced engineers. Interns commonly use CAD software to create or modify designs, help with prototype assembly, perform basic calculations, and assist in conducting experiments or tests. You can expect significant hands-on experience, especially in labs or on the shop floor, learning how theoretical concepts are applied in real-world engineering tasks. Collaboration with cross-functional teams, such as manufacturing or quality assurance, is typical, providing valuable exposure to the entire product lifecycle.

Which internship is best for mechanical engineering students?

The best internship for mechanical engineering students typically involves roles in manufacturing, design, or research and often requires proficiency in CAD software, problem-solving skills, and understanding of engineering principles. Internships at manufacturing firms, automotive companies, or aerospace organizations provide practical experience and industry exposure valuable for career development.

  • Coordinate design activities with electrical, structural, architectural, and commissioning teams to produce integrated construction documents.

Job description

Job Title: Mechanical Engineer

Job Description

This Mechanical Engineer role focuses on designing and engineering HVAC and related mechanical systems for a variety of building and industrial applications. You will perform detailed design work for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, as well as industrial piping, plumbing, central utility plants, compressed air systems, chilled water systems, steam systems, and fire protection. The position offers the opportunity to develop energy-efficient building solutions, work with advanced design tools, and contribute to projects in chemical, power, and industrial market segments within a supportive, development-focused culture.

Responsibilities

  • Design HVAC systems, including airside and hydronic systems, for building and industrial applications.
  • Perform load calculations to size and evaluate HVAC systems and components.
  • Size mechanical equipment, ductwork, and piping to meet project performance and code requirements.
  • Develop energy-efficient building solutions that optimize system performance and reduce energy consumption.
  • Select mechanical equipment such as chillers, boilers, air handling units (AHUs), variable air volume (VAV) systems, heat pumps, and related components.
  • Coordinate design activities with electrical, structural, architectural, and commissioning teams to produce integrated construction documents.
  • Review designs for code compliance and adherence to applicable standards and guidelines.
  • Stamp drawings when licensed as a Professional Engineer (PE), ensuring accuracy and compliance.
  • Interface directly with clients and project managers to understand project requirements, present design solutions, and address technical questions.
  • Mentor designers and junior engineers by providing technical guidance and reviewing their work.
  • Coordinate with other engineering disciplines to produce final construction drawings and details for mechanical engineering projects.
  • Develop conceptual mechanical designs and cost estimates during the early stages of the project life cycle.
  • Create design drawings using Revit 3D design software and other relevant design tools.
  • Conduct or participate in investigative energy assessments to identify energy and cost savings measures.
  • Assess and design building ventilation systems based on heat removal requirements and indoor air quality needs in industrial spaces.
  • Conduct spreadsheet analyses to evaluate the energy and cost savings of proposed energy conservation measures (ECMs).
  • Use building modeling software to determine envelope heat gains and losses and to assess the savings potential of ECMs.
  • Specify mechanical equipment and prepare detailed equipment schedules and documentation.
  • Design plumbing and building utility piping systems to support facility operations.
  • Summarize engineering results in written reports and presentations that are cohesive, clear, and of high quality.
  • Visit job sites as required for projects involving the upfit of existing systems to gather data and verify field conditions.
  • Work at industrial facilities on a limited travel basis (less than approximately 10%) to gather data for designs and support project execution.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in engineering and design of HVAC systems.
  • Hands-on experience with HVAC design, including building design, load calculations, and equipment selection.
  • Proficiency with Revit or AutoCAD MEP for mechanical design and documentation.
  • Experience designing large-scale hydronic systems.
  • Working knowledge of fire protection requirements for industrial facilities, including the International Fire Code (IFC), NFPA standards, and FM Global guidelines.
  • Ability to assess and design building ventilation systems for industrial spaces, including heat removal and indoor air quality requirements.
  • Ability to conduct energy and cost analyses for proposed energy conservation measures using spreadsheet tools.
  • Experience specifying mechanical equipment and designing plumbing and building utility piping systems.
  • Detail-oriented approach with strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability and desire to work in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Capability to summarize engineering findings in high-quality written reports and presentations.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience using Revit MEP for 3D mechanical design and coordination.
  • Experience conducting investigative energy assessments to identify energy and cost savings opportunities.
  • Familiarity with building modeling software to determine envelope heat gains and losses and evaluate energy conservation measures.
  • Interest in working in chemical, power, and industrial market segments.
  • Willingness to travel to industrial facilities for data gathering and project support (less than approximately 10% travel).
  • Experience mentoring designers and junior engineers.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license, with the ability to stamp drawings, is a strong advantage.
  • Strong collaboration skills for coordinating with multidisciplinary engineering and architectural teams.

Work Environment

This role is based in a hybrid work environment that combines remote work with in-office and field responsibilities. You will use modern design tools such as Revit, Revit MEP, and AutoCAD MEP, along with building modeling and spreadsheet software, to develop detailed mechanical and HVAC designs. The position involves working in a fast-paced setting where you collaborate closely with electrical, structural, architectural, and commissioning teams. You will occasionally visit industrial facilities and job sites, particularly for projects involving upgrades or modifications to existing systems, with travel expected to be less than approximately 10%. The culture emphasizes professional growth, leadership guided by strong principles, and a welcoming environment that values each person’s unique perspective.
