What Do Mechanical Engineers Do?

Mechanical Engineering is one of the broadest genres in the engineering industry. Specific job duties vary, depending on the kind of company and assigned project. In general, Mechanical Engineers spend their time researching, designing, developing, building, testing, and inspecting mechanical devices. These devices may include engines, tools, thermal sensors, and large machinery apparatus. On a daily basis, a Mechanical Engineer may spend time analyzing mechanical and thermal devices, troubleshooting problems, determining solutions, and completing repairs. They also develop and test technical and mechanical prototypes of new designs and devices. A Mechanical Engineer can also work on devices such as escalators, elevators, conveyor systems, and automated transfer stations.

What is the difference between Mechanical Engineer vs Mechanical Designer?

AspectMechanical EngineerMechanical Designer
Required CredentialsBachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, PE license (optional)Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Design, CAD certifications (often)
Work EnvironmentDesign, analysis, testing, project managementCreating detailed CAD models, drafting, and design documentation
Industry UsageEngineering firms, manufacturing, aerospace, automotiveProduct design, manufacturing, industrial equipment

Mechanical Engineers focus on designing, analyzing, and testing mechanical systems, often overseeing projects from conception to completion. Mechanical Designers primarily create detailed CAD models and drawings based on specifications. While both roles require technical skills and knowledge of mechanical systems, Mechanical Engineers typically have broader responsibilities including analysis and project management, whereas Mechanical Designers specialize in detailed design work.

What does a Mechanical Engineer do?

Job description

Mechanical Engineer
Who We Are
To accomplish their goals, the world's leading scientists, research institutions, and aerospace programs require highly specialized products and technology. We develop them.
Our team creates the products and technology that move the world forward. We engineer solutions to complex problems and deliver mission-critical components that advance science, exploration, and humanity. At Newton, we provide full-cycle engineering and product development support - from creating high-precision pointing mechanisms for spacecraft to solving shock isolation challenges for strategic operations; we're there, every step of the way.
Who We Are Looking For
We are growing our team and capabilities with a Mid-to-Senior Level Mechanical Engineer who has a demonstrated ability to create effective and elegant solutions. Newton engineers are self-starters, continually finding ways to improve processes and collaborate in small project team environments. If you are a well-rounded engineer who wants to solve a broad set of engineering challenges, let's talk. We promise a fast-moving environment where every day presents a learning opportunity while working on unique projects.
The Mechanical Engineer is a contributing member to our product development teams. Activities include:
  • Design and draft machine parts and assemblies using Solidworks.
  • Perform hand calculations to determine order of magnitude sizing for structural design elements (e.g., structural members in the load path, fastener size and quantity, etc.)
  • Create structural and thermal Finite Element Models (FEMs) using NxNastran / Femap and Thermal Desktop.
  • Analyze parts using requirements / load cases via finite element models and supporting software.
  • Coordinate piece part manufacturing and assembly, as well as orders for commercial components (e.g., fasteners).
  • Draft test plans and procedures in conjunction with design engineers.
  • Draft PowerPoint slide presentations detailing the current design / analysis status and relevant assumptions.
  • Participate in engineering technical reviews and design / product configuration decisions.
  • Provide other design engineers with recommendations to improve product performance or simplify manufacturing.
  • Assist in the assembly and testing of various pieces of hardware with junior and senior engineers.
  • Act as a mentor for less experienced mechanical engineers on the team.
  • Continuously improve technical knowledge based on new developments in structural design / analysis methodologies and software.

Qualifications
  • Degreed professional in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related field.
  • Demonstrated progression in technical responsibilities.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience as a mechanical engineer, preferably in the Aerospace Industry, ideally 6+ years of experience.
  • Experience performing engineering design of mechanical components / assemblies is required.
  • Experience performing structural analysis is highly desired.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Solidworks design, assembly, and drafting.
  • To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
