What Are the Daily Responsibilities of a Mechanical Engineer?

The daily responsibilities of a mechanical engineer focus on design, development, testing, and deployment of mechanical components, equipment, and devices. In this field, you may also work with thermal equipment. Entry-level mechanical engineers typically operate as part of a team; your designs are reviewed and have to be approved by a senior staff member. Once you have gained experience, you may be assigned your own project and have more independence. You design and visualize components using computer-aided design software or test materials, and can also work onsite on specific projects, such as designing and installing escalators for a construction project. If you have no experience, you usually report to a senior engineer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mechanical Engineer with no experience, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mechanical Engineer with no experience, a solid understanding of engineering principles, mathematics, and physics—typically gained through a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering—is essential. Familiarity with CAD software (such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD), basic programming, and exposure to industry standards are commonly expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication help new engineers adapt and contribute to projects. These skills and qualities enable entry-level engineers to learn quickly, support senior staff, and ensure accurate project execution.

What types of projects and tasks can a Mechanical Engineer with no experience expect to work on in their first year?

As a Mechanical Engineer starting out with no prior experience, you will typically support more senior engineers by working on foundational tasks such as creating and updating technical drawings, assisting with prototype assembly, performing basic calculations, and conducting data analysis for ongoing projects. You may also participate in team meetings, help with documentation, and observe testing procedures. This exposure is designed to build your confidence, familiarize you with company processes, and gradually introduce you to more complex engineering challenges as you gain hands-on experience.

What does a mechanical engineer with no experience do?

A mechanical engineer with no experience typically starts in entry-level roles, assisting with designing, testing, or maintaining mechanical systems under the supervision of senior engineers. Their responsibilities may include drafting technical drawings, performing basic calculations, and helping with data collection or prototype testing. These positions provide hands-on learning and exposure to industry practices, allowing new graduates to develop practical skills and gain experience in the field.
