How much do mechanical engineer mechanical design engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Jul 29, 2026, the average yearly pay for mechanical engineer mechanical design engineer in the United States is $102,878.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $81,500.00 and $126,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges faced by Mechanical Design Engineers when working on multidisciplinary teams?

Mechanical Design Engineers often collaborate with professionals from electrical, software, and manufacturing backgrounds, which can lead to challenges such as aligning design specifications, managing differing priorities, and ensuring compatibility between subsystems. Clear communication and regular cross-functional meetings are essential to address these challenges. Additionally, adapting designs based on feedback from other disciplines and balancing technical requirements with project constraints are key aspects of the role.

What does a Mechanical Design Engineer do?

A Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for designing and developing mechanical systems, components, and products. They use computer-aided design (CAD) software to create detailed blueprints and models, ensuring that designs meet technical specifications and safety standards. Their work often involves collaborating with other engineers, testing prototypes, and making improvements based on performance and feedback. Mechanical Design Engineers play a crucial role in industries such as automotive, aerospace, manufacturing, and consumer products.

What is the difference between Mechanical Engineer Mechanical Design Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectMechanical EngineerMechanical Design Engineer
Primary FocusBroader engineering tasks, system analysis, manufacturing processesDesign and development of mechanical components and systems
Required SkillsEngineering principles, problem-solving, project managementCAD software, design analysis, creativity
Work EnvironmentManufacturing plants, R&D labs, consulting firmsDesign studios, engineering departments, product development teams
CertificationsPE license often preferredCAD certifications, possibly PE license

While both roles require strong engineering fundamentals, Mechanical Engineers focus on overall systems and processes, whereas Mechanical Design Engineers specialize in creating detailed mechanical designs and drawings. The roles often overlap, but the Design Engineer emphasizes design and CAD skills more heavily.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mechanical Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mechanical Design Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical engineering principles, proficiency in design calculations, and typically at least a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related field. Mastery of CAD software (such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or CATIA) and familiarity with simulation tools or relevant certifications (like PE licensure) are essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and clear communication skills help set candidates apart. These skills and qualifications are crucial for creating innovative, reliable designs and ensuring effective project collaboration from concept through production.

Job description

Mechanical Design Engineer
Design Custom Equipment. Solve Real Manufacturing Challenges.
CHL Systems is hiring a Mechanical Design Engineer to design and develop custom automation, conveyor, packaging, and material handling equipment.
This is not repetitive design work. Each project brings different customer requirements, equipment layouts, technical challenges, and manufacturing considerations. You will work alongside Project Engineers and cross-functional teams to turn design concepts into detailed 3D models, manufacturing drawings, and equipment that can be successfully fabricated, assembled, and installed.
Why Join CHL Systems?
  • Competitive salary based on experience
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance, PTO, paid holidays, and 401(k) with company match
  • Stable, family-owned company with more than 65 years in business
  • Opportunity to design custom equipment instead of working on the same products every day
  • Clear advancement path towards increased project ownership and responsibility
What You’ll Do
  • Collaborate with Project Engineers, Project Managers, and Applications teams to review customer specifications and define design requirements
  • Develop detailed 3D models and mechanical assemblies using SolidWorks
  • Create accurate manufacturing drawings that include dimensions, tolerances, weldments, fabrication details, and other production information
  • Design equipment with functionality, manufacturability, serviceability, quality, and safety in mind
  • Participate in engineering design reviews, project meetings, and project-status updates
  • Maintain engineering documentation and properly release drawings and production information through internal systems
  • Work directly with Manufacturing Engineers and production teams to support fabrication and assembly
  • Troubleshoot and help resolve design, fabrication, and assembly issues during production
  • Communicate design changes that may affect project scope, schedule, or budget
  • Provide occasional local support at customer sites for project, installation, or troubleshooting needs
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Three to five years of experience designing mechanical equipment, conveyor systems, automated machinery, or similar custom industrial equipment
  • Professional proficiency with SolidWorks, including 3D modeling, assemblies, and detailed drawings
  • Experience creating manufacturing drawings with dimensioning, tolerancing, weldments, and fabrication details
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, technical specifications, and project requirements
  • Understanding of mechanical design principles, manufacturability, and functional performance
  • Experience working with manufacturing or production teams to support equipment fabrication, assembly, or troubleshooting
  • Strong mechanical aptitude, problem-solving ability, and attention to detail
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments and collaborate effectively in a fast-paced, project-based environment
Professional Skills
  • Experience designing custom automation, conveyor, packaging, or material handling equipment
  • Knowledge of welding, machining, sheet metal fabrication, and structural assemblies
  • Familiarity with SolidWorks PDM or another engineering file-management system
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD or another 2D CAD platform
  • Experience applying GD amp;T and established drafting standards
  • Hands-on experience supporting equipment installation, troubleshooting, or commissioning
  • Experience working in a custom manufacturing or design-build environment
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
  • Combination of office, engineering, and manufacturing-floor environments
  • Regular collaboration with engineering, manufacturing, fabrication, assembly, and production teams
  • Ability to occasionally stand, walk, bend, and safely navigate manufacturing areas
  • Ability to visually inspect mechanical components, drawings, assemblies, and production work
  • Occasional lifting of light to moderate objects, typically up to 25 pounds
  • Exposure to machinery, noise, and other typical manufacturing conditions while on the production floor
  • Occasional work in confined or interstitial spaces when supporting equipment or installations
  • Occasional local travel to customer sites
