Job description

Nightwing is hiring a Senior Mechanical Engineer for our Springfield, VA location to support technology development and mission programs. As part of a collaborative team of mechanical, civil, and electrical engineers, you will develop solutions from concept through prototype development, testing, documentation, and production.

Job Duties:

The Senior Mechanical Engineer will collaborate with teams to develop innovative, practical solutions and drive program success. Key responsibilities include product design, advanced engineering analysis, creating and delivering drawings, coordinating hardware fabrication, and authoring detailed technical procedures. The role also involves preparing presentations, field reports, cost estimates, and design reviews for diverse audiences. Additionally, the engineer will assist the Program Manager with technical, cost, and schedule requirements of current tasks and help shape strategies for future tasks based on customer needs. Ideal candidates are professional, self-motivated, innovative, and possess strong communication and problem-solving skills, working effectively with engineers, technicians, and customer staff.

Required Qualifications:
  • Candidate must hold or be willing to obtain a TS/SCI clearance with CI polygraph Minimum of two (2) years of relevant experience in Mechanical Engineering or a related field with a bachelor’s degree, or three (3) years with an advanced degree.
  • Product development experience using rapid, iterative design and prototyping methods with frequent integration/test cycles
  • Practical, hands-on experience building, testing, and troubleshooting prototypes, including motors, actuators, and sensors
  • Experience with CAD software for mechanical design and documentation (SolidWorks & Revit preferred)
  • Demonstrated written and oral communication skills, with the ability to prepare reports, presentations, and documentation
  • Proficient in mechanics of materials, statics, dynamics, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, multi-disciplinary, collaborative team environment balancing diverse project tasks and types
  • Working knowledge of common hand and powered tools
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Willingness and ability to travel for temporary assignments (less than 10% travel)
Desired Qualifications:
  • Coursework in Finite Element Analysis and Mechanics of Materials
  • Experience with engineering data analysis tools such as Matlab and Mathcad
  • Experience designing for and using additive manufacturing
  • Professional Engineer (PE) License in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline
  • Project Management experience
Salary & Benefits:

The salary associated with this position ($64,000-$128,000) is commensurate with the selected candidate’s qualifications, years of relevant experience, and demonstrated level of expertise. Compensation will be determined based on these factors to ensure alignment with skills, responsibilities, and market standards.
