What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mechanical Design Analysis Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mechanical Design Analysis Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical engineering principles, proficiency in design and analysis methodologies, and typically a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with CAD software (such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD), finite element analysis (FEA) tools, and relevant industry codes or certifications (like PE licensure) is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you excel in collaborating with cross-functional teams and presenting technical findings. These competencies ensure the development of reliable, efficient products and effective resolution of design challenges.

How does a Mechanical Design Analysis Engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a product development cycle?

Mechanical Design Analysis Engineers often work closely with product designers, manufacturing engineers, and quality assurance teams throughout the product development process. They provide critical analysis and simulation data to help refine designs, ensure manufacturability, and verify that products meet safety and performance standards. Regular meetings, design reviews, and collaborative problem-solving sessions are common, allowing for real-time feedback and iterative improvements. This collaborative environment ensures that the final product is optimized from both a design and engineering perspective.

What is the difference between Mechanical Design Analysis Engineer vs Mechanical Design Engineer?

AspectMechanical Design Analysis EngineerMechanical Design Engineer
Primary FocusAnalyzing mechanical systems for performance, stress, and durabilityCreating and developing mechanical components and assemblies
Skills & CertificationsFEM, CAD, analytical tools, engineering degreesCAD, design software, engineering degrees
Work EnvironmentDesign validation labs, simulation software, R&D teamsDesign offices, manufacturing plants, prototyping labs
Industry UsageAutomotive, aerospace, manufacturing, R&DProduct development, manufacturing, engineering firms

Both roles require engineering degrees and CAD skills, but the Mechanical Design Analysis Engineer specializes in evaluating and testing mechanical systems through analysis, while the Mechanical Design Engineer focuses on creating and developing new mechanical designs.

What does a Mechanical Design Analysis Engineer do?

A Mechanical Design Analysis Engineer is responsible for designing and analyzing mechanical components and systems to ensure they meet performance, safety, and reliability standards. They use computer-aided design (CAD) software and simulation tools to model and test designs under various conditions. Their work often involves collaborating with other engineers, reviewing technical drawings, and optimizing designs to improve efficiency and reduce costs. Additionally, they may be involved in prototype testing and troubleshooting to resolve any design issues before manufacturing.

Job description

Flight Controls Mechanical Hydraulics Design & Analysis Engineer (Experienced or Senior)

Company:

The Boeing Company

Boeing Commercial Airplanes is seeking a Flight Controls Mechanical Hydraulics Design & Analysis Engineer (Experienced or Senior) to join our 787 Flight Controls Mechanical Hydraulics Engineering team located in North Charleston, South Carolina.

The Flight Controls Mechanical Hydraulics Design & Analysis Engineer will support the development of one of the following sub-teams within the Flight Controls Mechanical Hydraulics team: Primary Flight Control Systems, High Lift Systems, Flight Control Electronics, Hydraulic Systems, Landing Gear Actuation and Steering Systems, Brake Control Systems.

This requisition is seeking accomplished, self-motivated mid-career and senior engineers to design, analyze, test, certify, and support flight control and mechanical hydraulic systems and components (e.g. mechanical and hydraulic actuators [linear and rotary], electro-mechanical valves, hydraulic valves, sensors [LVDTs, RVDTs, Resolvers], gearboxes, torque tubes, electronic control units, and more) for the 787 family of aircraft as well as to support the production and fleet operations of this equipment. This requisition is for multiple positions in multiple flight control and mechanical hydraulic disciplines performing many of the tasks listed below.

Flight Controls Mechanical Hydraulics Design & Analysis Engineer should be able to establish hand-calculations to spot-check computational analysis, perform multi-variable engineering analysis, develop test procedures to validate analysis tools, and develop Systems/Components interface requirements. In addition, candidates should have clear communication skills for reporting progress to a wide audience, the ability to develop a set of project goals and objectives, develop a project schedule, maintain and execute engineering on time.

Strong candidates should have technical knowledge in one or more of the following areas: system controls, mechanical systems, electrical systems, systems modeling, Electro-mechanical actuation, thermodynamics and fluid dynamics, aircraft certification, experience with model correlation from data to analysis tools, and experience with Cameo, Matlab/Simulink, Scripting code (Matlab, C ++, Python), and/or experience with physical modeling tools such as Easy5, Adams, or Simscape.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Resolves airplane level requirements into system level requirements and resolve system level requirements into component requirements with time and cost-efficient validation methods.

  • Participates in and lead system, component, and detail design efforts with thorough documentation within schedule and cost constraints to create error free, readily manufactured system and component specifications and drawings.

  • Participates in and lead system level and component level validation analysis and testing, including plan creation; system and component test rigs; test monitoring; analysis and test report authoring; supplier test report review and approval; test failure analysis; and test failure mitigation.

  • Participates in and lead system, component, and detail certification efforts, including creation of required certification artifacts, such as, system safety analysis, failure modes and effects analysis, and fault tree analysis; confirming and demonstrating traceability to regulatory requirements; and resolution of regulation conflicts.

  • Supports on-going production efforts including timely resolution of build problems at Boeing and supplier manufacturing facilities; identifying and implementing design improvements to build accuracy, build rate, and production line safety; and timely resolution of rejections, functional test failures and flight squawks.

  • Supports global fleet operations including subject matter expert consultation for airline and regulator queries; participate in and lead resolution efforts to resolve Service Related Problems (SRP); and analyze reported flight incidents to provide recommendations to the Safety Review Board (SRB) for Continued Operational Safety Program (COSP) determinations.

  • Generally, these activities require successful cross-functional coordination within and outside of Boeing including with: manufacturing, avionics, crew-ops, airplane safety, aerodynamics, supply chain management, BCA systems software, suppliers, airline customers, and regulatory agencies.
