How much do mechanic design jobs pay per year?

As of Jul 16, 2026, the average yearly pay for mechanic design in the United States is $74,412.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $63,000.00 and $92,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mechanical Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mechanical Designer, you need a strong background in mechanical engineering principles, proficiency in technical drawing, and typically a relevant degree or certification. Familiarity with CAD software (such as AutoCAD or SolidWorks) and simulation tools is crucial for creating and analyzing design models. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and good communication skills help ensure accurate designs and effective collaboration with engineering teams. These skills are vital for producing innovative, manufacturable designs that meet project requirements and industry standards.

What is the difference between Mechanic Design vs Mechanical Engineering?

AspectMechanic DesignMechanical Engineering
Required CredentialsAssociate's or Bachelor's in Mechanical Design, CAD certificationsBachelor's or higher in Mechanical Engineering, PE license often preferred
Work EnvironmentDesign studios, CAD labs, manufacturing settingsResearch labs, manufacturing plants, consulting firms
Industry UsageProduct design, prototyping, CAD modelingSystem design, thermodynamics, structural analysis

Mechanic Design focuses on creating detailed product models and prototypes using CAD tools, often with specific design certifications. Mechanical Engineering covers a broader scope, including analysis, system design, and engineering principles, often requiring a PE license. Both roles are integral to manufacturing and product development but differ in scope and credentials.

What are some common challenges faced by mechanical design engineers in project development?

Mechanical design engineers often encounter challenges such as balancing innovation with manufacturability, managing strict project timelines, and ensuring compliance with industry standards. Collaboration with cross-functional teams—such as manufacturing, electrical, and quality assurance—is essential to address design constraints and optimize product performance. Staying up to date with evolving CAD tools and rapidly changing technology also requires continuous learning and adaptation.

What is a Mechanic Design?

A Mechanic Design refers to a professional who specializes in designing mechanical systems and components, often using computer-aided design (CAD) software. These individuals are responsible for creating blueprints, models, and specifications for machines, tools, engines, and other mechanical devices. Mechanic Design professionals play a key role in ensuring that designs are efficient, functional, and manufacturable while meeting safety and regulatory standards. They often collaborate with engineers, manufacturers, and other stakeholders throughout the development process.

As a member of the team, the selected candidate will be an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer who is responsible for designing and engineering production-ready kiosks and retail displays that meet client needs and budgetary constraints. This role involves mechanical design, assembly creation, and ongoing communication with internal teams and suppliers to ensure quality and safety standards.

This is a direct hire position for our customers with the opportunity of professional growth, and additional opportunities within their organization.

Duties:

  • Perform mechanical design of kiosks and displays using Solidworks, from initial concept sketches or provided geometry.
  • Develop assemblies, sub-assemblies, part drawings, and Bills of Materials (BOMs) using Solidworks.
  • Communicate effectively with project teams and suppliers to troubleshoot design and production issues.
  • Ensure that all designs meet client specifications, safety regulations, and budget constraints.
  • Specify materials, hardware, and fabrication methods, with a strong focus on sheet metal, wood, and molded plastic components.
  • Approve prototype and production parts, ensuring consistency with design specifications.
  • Occasionally travel to client sites for display measurements and installations.
  • Research new materials and fabrication methods to enhance engineering capabilities.
  • Assist with prototype assembly and identify potential improvements for documentation and revision.
  • Provide necessary drawing views to support the production and assembly process.

Requirements:

  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, particularly in mechanical design.
  • Excellent communication skills for collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in mechanical calculations, including geometry and basic algebra
  • Associates or Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Design/Engineering or related field, or equivalent experience required.
  • At least five years of related experience required.
  • Proven experience designing retail displays, kiosks, point-of-purchase (POP) displays, fixtures, store environments, or similar customer-facing products.
  • Advanced proficiency with SolidWorks, including multi-part assemblies, sheet metal, weldments, configurations, and drawing creation.
  • Experience designing products for high-volume manufacturing with an emphasis on Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA).
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes including sheet metal fabrication, CNC machining, wood fabrication, plastics, injection molding, thermoforming, and powder coating.

Preferred:

  • Proficiency in Solidworks and Microsoft Excel; experience with P.O.P. displays and sheet metal enclosures.
