Mechanic Design information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mechanical Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mechanical Designer, you need a strong background in mechanical engineering principles, proficiency in technical drawing, and typically a relevant degree or certification. Familiarity with CAD software (such as AutoCAD or SolidWorks) and simulation tools is crucial for creating and analyzing design models. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and good communication skills help ensure accurate designs and effective collaboration with engineering teams. These skills are vital for producing innovative, manufacturable designs that meet project requirements and industry standards.

What are some common challenges faced by mechanical design engineers in project development?

Mechanical design engineers often encounter challenges such as balancing innovation with manufacturability, managing strict project timelines, and ensuring compliance with industry standards. Collaboration with cross-functional teams—such as manufacturing, electrical, and quality assurance—is essential to address design constraints and optimize product performance. Staying up to date with evolving CAD tools and rapidly changing technology also requires continuous learning and adaptation.

What is a Mechanic Design?

A Mechanic Design refers to a professional who specializes in designing mechanical systems and components, often using computer-aided design (CAD) software. These individuals are responsible for creating blueprints, models, and specifications for machines, tools, engines, and other mechanical devices. Mechanic Design professionals play a key role in ensuring that designs are efficient, functional, and manufacturable while meeting safety and regulatory standards. They often collaborate with engineers, manufacturers, and other stakeholders throughout the development process.

What is the difference between Mechanic Design vs Mechanical Engineering?

AspectMechanic DesignMechanical Engineering
Required CredentialsAssociate's or Bachelor's in Mechanical Design, CAD certificationsBachelor's or higher in Mechanical Engineering, PE license often preferred
Work EnvironmentDesign studios, CAD labs, manufacturing settingsResearch labs, manufacturing plants, consulting firms
Industry UsageProduct design, prototyping, CAD modelingSystem design, thermodynamics, structural analysis

Mechanic Design focuses on creating detailed product models and prototypes using CAD tools, often with specific design certifications. Mechanical Engineering covers a broader scope, including analysis, system design, and engineering principles, often requiring a PE license. Both roles are integral to manufacturing and product development but differ in scope and credentials.

Job description

If you're the kind of engineer who doesn't just design on paper but thinks in systems, solves in 3D, and leads from the front, this is your stage.

A growing and innovative engineering company in the water treatment space is looking for a Sr / Lead Mechanical Design Engineer to take ownership of mechanical design projects and help shape the future of critical infrastructure. You'll be the technical heartbeat of the team, guiding designs from concept to fabrication-ready reality.

This is not a sit-back-and-observe role. This is a plug-in, take charge, make it better opportunity.

What You'll Be Owning

Design & Engineering Excellence

  • Design and model complex piping systems, tanks, and assemblies using SolidWorks (including Routing tools)
  • Create precise 3D models and production-ready fabrication drawings
  • Run interference checks, tolerance stack-ups, and mechanical calculations
  • Refine and adapt designs based on real-world feedback and engineering changes
  • Maintain clean, structured file management using PDM systems

Leadership & Technical Direction

  • Act as the go-to technical expert on mechanical design projects
  • Lead and mentor a small team of mechanical design engineers
  • Review and elevate designs for accuracy, manufacturability, and compliance
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with engineering, manufacturing, and project teams
  • Drive continuous improvement in design processes and standards

Requirements

What You Bring to the Table
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering (or similar) with 10+ years of experience
or 15-20 years of hands-on mechanical design expertise
  • Advanced proficiency in SolidWorks, especially Routing tools
  • Strong experience designing piping systems, tanks, and industrial assemblies
  • Proven track record of delivering production-ready drawings
  • Natural leadership ability with a passion for mentoring others
  • Clear communicator who thrives in a collaborative environment
Bonus Points If You Have
  • Experience with water treatment or similar industrial systems
  • Knowledge of fluid dynamics, pumps, valves, and instrumentation
  • Background working in fabrication or manufacturing environments
The Essentials
  • SolidWorks Routing: 3-5 years
  • Piping design: 3-5 years
  • Production-ready drawings: 3-5 years

Benefits

What's In It for You
  • 401(k)
  • Health insurance
  • Paid time off
  • A tight-knit, supportive team with low turnover and real growth opportunities
  • The chance to work on tangible, meaningful engineering projects that serve communities
