Mechanic Design information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mechanical designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mechanical Designer, you need a strong background in mechanical engineering principles, proficiency in technical drawing, and typically a relevant degree or certification. Familiarity with CAD software (such as AutoCAD or SolidWorks) and simulation tools is crucial for creating and analyzing design models. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and good communication skills help ensure accurate designs and effective collaboration with engineering teams. These skills are vital for producing innovative, manufacturable designs that meet project requirements and industry standards.

What is the difference between Mechanic Design vs Mechanical Engineering?

AspectMechanic DesignMechanical Engineering
Required CredentialsAssociate's or Bachelor's in Mechanical Design, CAD certificationsBachelor's or higher in Mechanical Engineering, PE license often preferred
Work EnvironmentDesign studios, CAD labs, manufacturing settingsResearch labs, manufacturing plants, consulting firms
Industry UsageProduct design, prototyping, CAD modelingSystem design, thermodynamics, structural analysis

Mechanic Design focuses on creating detailed product models and prototypes using CAD tools, often with specific design certifications. Mechanical Engineering covers a broader scope, including analysis, system design, and engineering principles, often requiring a PE license. Both roles are integral to manufacturing and product development but differ in scope and credentials.

What are some common challenges faced by mechanical design engineers in project development?

Mechanical design engineers often encounter challenges such as balancing innovation with manufacturability, managing strict project timelines, and ensuring compliance with industry standards. Collaboration with cross-functional teams—such as manufacturing, electrical, and quality assurance—is essential to address design constraints and optimize product performance. Staying up to date with evolving CAD tools and rapidly changing technology also requires continuous learning and adaptation.

What is a mechanic design?

A Mechanic Design refers to a professional who specializes in designing mechanical systems and components, often using computer-aided design (CAD) software. These individuals are responsible for creating blueprints, models, and specifications for machines, tools, engines, and other mechanical devices. Mechanic Design professionals play a key role in ensuring that designs are efficient, functional, and manufacturable while meeting safety and regulatory standards. They often collaborate with engineers, manufacturers, and other stakeholders throughout the development process.

Region: Portland or Salt Lake City

Department: Advanced Integration

Reports to: Director of Design and Engineering, VP of Advanced Integration

Position Overview

The Product Design Engineer is responsible for the design and development of manufactured equipment for mission-critical facilities. This is an individual-contributor role focused on creating integrated, modular, and prefabricated equipment solutions. The Product Design Engineer works at the intersection of product design, manufacturing, and data center construction, ensuring that designs meet the technical requirements of data centers while being optimized for manufacturing and assembly. The primary focus of the role is designing technology products related to data center construction, such as hot aisle containment and other prefabricated systems.

The role requires a working knowledge of data center functions, including structural, mechanical, electrical, and technology systems, or the ability to develop it, along with a commitment to delivering high-quality, well-coordinated designs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design new hot aisle containment solutions for data centers that is modular, prefabricated, and tailored to specific client needs.
  • Develop and refine manufactured equipment solutions for mission-critical environments, focusing on manufacturability and ease of integration.
  • Develop and maintain project plans and timelines for assigned products.
  • Collaborate with project management and other stakeholders to define product requirements and specifications.
  • Conduct research to identify new product opportunities and technology trends.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant regulatory requirements and standards.
  • Participate in product testing and validation activities.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with suppliers, vendors, and partners.
  • Collaborate closely with the Engineering and Manufacturing departments to ensure designs are feasible, cost-effective, and aligned with production capabilities.
  • Incorporate knowledge of data center functionality, including structural frames, mechanical cooling system, electrical distribution (rackbus, tap boxes), and technology infrastructure.
  • Attend client meetings and refine design based on client requirements.
  • Validate design through prototype, pre-production and first-of-kind builds, conducting DFx and value engineering analysis through each step and updating design and documentation.
  • Produce comprehensive documentation of designs, including detailed product submittals and technical specifications.
  • Create and maintain 3D models for coordination with other trades and for use in presentation materials for clients and internal stakeholders.
  • Ensure all designs comply with industry standards and client-specific requirements for mission-critical facilities.

Qualifications & Skills

Required

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design, Product Design, or a related engineering field.
  • Experience: 5+ years of experience in product design, mechanical design, or product development engineering.
  • Industry Knowledge: Experience with data center construction and an understanding of data center functionality (structural, mechanical, electrical, and technology).
  • Software Proficiency: Knowledge of Inventor, SolidWorks or other 3D design software. Knowledge of Revit or ability to learn. Knowledge of Microsoft Office products and Bluebeam Revu

Preferred

  • Experience with, or working knowledge of, data center construction and functionality (structural, mechanical, electrical, and technology systems).
  • Experience in the design and manufacturing of modular or prefabricated systems.
  • Familiarity with mission-critical infrastructure and the unique requirements of hyperscale data center clients.
  • Excellent project management skills, including the ability to develop and manage project plans, timelines, and budgets.
  • Strong communication skills for collaborating across engineering, manufacturing, and client teams.

Work Environment & Travel

This position is based in Portland or Salt Lake City.
