Position Summary

The Assistant Meat Manager is an hourly position that supports the Meat Manager in all aspects of department operations, including product handling, merchandising, quality control, customer service, cleanliness, and employee development. This position plays a key role in achieving sales, profitability, and customer satisfaction goals while ensuring compliance with company standards and policies.

General Purpose

The Assistant Meat Manager supports the Meat Manager in overseeing the daily operations of the meat department to ensure the highest standards of product quality, freshness, cleanliness, and customer service. This position assists in managing inventory, merchandising, and sales initiatives while maintaining compliance with company policies and food safety standards. The Assistant Meat Manager helps lead and develop team members to achieve departmental goals in profitability, productivity, and customer satisfaction.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operations and Product Handling: Receives, organizes, and stores meats in coolers and freezers. Cuts, trims, tenderizes, ties, and grinds meats according to Food Giant quality standards. Properly uses, sanitizes, and maintains tools and equipment. Fills meat display cases and rotates merchandise using FIFO (First In, First Out) procedures. Maintains a healthy, safe, and clean work environment in accordance with company standards. Consistently follows all company rules, policies, and guidelines. Assists in achieving departmental sales, productivity, and profitability goals as directed by the Store Manager and Operations Group.
  • Freshness and Fullness: Ensures all meat quality and handling procedures meet company standards. Cleans, culls, and faces all display counters by 9:00 a.m. Sets counters according to schematics and layout by 9:00 a.m. Identifies and reworks shrink items as needed; reports shrink to the Administration Manager. Ensures fresh grinds and full fresh meat cases by 9:00 a.m. Fills beef category first after grinds are completed. Follows all packaging and labeling standards and guidelines. Monitors product variety, availability, and seasonal selection. Ensures all advertised products are available and properly signed. Completes the daily production set list by 9:00 a.m. Rotates all product according to date and freshness.
  • Inventory Control: Assists with daily and weekly inventory of all meat products. Notifies the Meat Manager promptly when stock shortages occur. Ensures all ordering is completed properly and on time. Verifies invoices for accuracy and conducts random weight checks. Follows procedures for product recalls, documentation, and proper disposal per company policy. Maintains inventory cost equal to weekly retail sales or less. Demonstrates strong knowledge of cutting, packaging, wrapping, labeling, cleaning, merchandising, and display skills. Understands key metrics such as sales, gross profit %, SPMH, labor %, inventory turns, shrink ($ and %), tonnage (lbs./manhour), and item count.
  • Service: Builds and maintains strong relationships with customers and the community. Provides prompt, courteous, and friendly assistance to all customers. Actively promotes products and programs within the meat department. Ensures all customer inquiries, comments, and complaints are handled promptly and escalated to the Market Manager when needed. Assists with front-end service when required (e.g., courtesy clerk duties).
  • Cleanliness: Adheres to all workplace and food safety, cleaning, sanitation, and personal hygiene procedures. Ensures compliance with uniform and grooming policies. Properly sanitizes and maintains tools, equipment, and personal protective equipment. Ensures pest prevention procedures and guidelines are maintained. Follows all general cleanup standards and daily cleaning schedules. Ensures timely disposal of waste and garbage per company procedures.
  • Exciting Promotions: Generates sales through active selling and strong knowledge of current ads, promotions, and merchandising. Properly implements all merchandising and layout procedures for fresh, deli, and frozen cases. Follows all meat marketing programs, including sampling and demonstrations. Supports customer loyalty programs. Ensures weekly and monthly feature signage is properly hung and maintained.
  • People Development: Actively participates in building an effective, high-performing team environment. Supports team members in achieving performance, development, and job satisfaction goals. Demonstrates a positive attitude, strong work habits, professionalism, and teamwork. Follows all weekly work schedules and assists other staff as needed. Participates in regular employee meetings and training sessions.
  • Additional Responsibilities: Will be responsible for completing other task or duties assigned by the Meat Manager, Store Manager, or corporate support team as needed.


Requirements:

Qualifications

  • Prior experience in meat cutting or retail meat operations preferred.
  • Knowledge of meat products, cuts, and quality standards.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and customer service skills.
  • Ability to lift, move, and carry products up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours, including early mornings, weekends, and holidays.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift and carry heavy items (up to 50 pounds) and stand for extended periods.
  • Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination for cutting, handling, and preparing meat products.
  • Ability to work in refrigerated environments and handle sharp tools and equipment safely.
