What is an MDM developer?

An MDM (Master Data Management) Developer is a technology professional responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining systems that manage an organization's critical data assets, such as customer, product, or supplier information. They work to ensure data consistency, accuracy, and integrity across multiple systems and departments. MDM Developers often use specialized tools and platforms to integrate, cleanse, and govern master data, enabling businesses to make more informed decisions and comply with regulations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an MDM developer?

To thrive as an MDM Developer, you need a strong background in data management, database design, and proficiency with Master Data Management (MDM) concepts, often supported by a degree in computer science or related field. Experience with MDM platforms such as Informatica MDM, IBM InfoSphere, or Oracle MDM, as well as knowledge of data integration tools and SQL, is typically required. Analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills to excel in this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring data consistency, quality, and governance across enterprise systems.

What are some common challenges faced by an MDM developer when integrating data from multiple source systems?

As an MDM Developer, one of the main challenges is dealing with inconsistent data formats, varying data quality, and duplicate records across different source systems. Successfully integrating data often requires establishing robust data cleansing, matching, and merging rules to ensure accuracy and consistency. Additionally, collaborating closely with business analysts and data stewards is essential to understand business requirements and maintain data governance standards throughout the integration process.

Job description

About the Role:
As a CBRE MDM Sr Principal Engineer, you will be at the forefront of transforming CBRE's enterprise data landscape, with Master Data Management central to this initiative. You will take ownership of our Reltio MDM platform, serving as the ultimate subject matter expert for all Reltio-related aspects. You will architect data models, design complex match/merge rules, and drive the technical vision for MDM across the entire enterprise. This high-impact individual contributor role, reporting directly to the Senior Director of Data Governance and Engineering, requires you to bridge the gap between business strategy and technical execution, ensuring our master data is accurate, connected, and scalable. You will be embedded within a 20-person governance and engineering team, playing a crucial role in our data evolution.
This job is part of the Software Engineering job function. They are responsible for successfully executing and monitoring system improvements to increase efficiency.
What You'll Do:
  • Architect and build enterprise-grade Master Data Management solutions natively within Reltio, owning the platform end-to-end.
  • Design and configure complex L3 configurations, match/merge rules, survivorship frameworks, and data quality workflows.
  • Define and maintain the MDM data model across CBRE's core entity domains - clients, properties, counterparties, and organizations - ensuring models are scalable as new domains onboard.
  • Establish and govern MDM engineering standards for configuration, naming conventions, API usage, and environment management (dev/test/prod).
  • Lead technical integrations between Reltio, Snowflake, AWS, and upstream/downstream systems using SnapLogic and direct API patterns.
  • Build and maintain data synchronization pipelines that keep master data consistent across the CBRE data estate - from source systems through to Snowflake and governed data products.
  • Partner with the Collibra Engineering Lead to ensure Reltio entity data is accurately reflected in the data catalog, lineage, and governance metadata.
  • Partner with the DQ Engineering Lead to ensure MDM entity resolution and survivorship outputs are monitored and quality-scored within SODA.
  • Collaborate with the Principal AI Engineer to integrate LLM-based entity matching, deduplication, and enrichment capabilities into Reltio workflows.
  • Evaluate and implement AI-assisted MDM capabilities - intelligent match scoring, automated survivorship decisions, and anomaly flagging - to reduce manual stewardship burden at scale.
  • Ensure AI-generated MDM outputs are governed, auditable, and validated against CBRE's data quality and governance standards before promotion to master.
  • Set the standard for MDM best practices, data modeling, and governance standards across the team.
  • Build UI/UX experiences for data stewards - workflows, dashboards, and issue queues in Reltio that make stewardship intuitive and efficient.
  • Act as the senior technical voice on MDM in cross-functional forums - architecture reviews, data product launches, and governance councils.
  • Lead by example and model behaviors that are consistent with CBRE RISE values. Navigate objections and disagreements. Set the tone for teams to reach an agreement and adopt a different point of view. Negotiate with senior and executive management, customers, regulators, or vendors to influence decisions of visionary and strategic importance.
  • Apply ingenuity and creativity to problem analysis and resolution in complicated and/or novel situations.

What You'll Need:
To perform this job successfully, an individual will need to perform each crucial duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.
  • Bachelor's Degree preferred with 10+ years of relevant experience in Master Data Management (MDM) implementation at an enterprise scale. In lieu of a degree, a combination of experience and education will be considered.
  • Deep expertise in Reltio MDM solutions, including extensive hands-on experience with L3 configuration, Reltio API, and UI configuration.
  • Mastery of MDM concepts, entity resolution, graph databases, and data governance frameworks.
  • Proficiency with modern data stacks (e.g., Snowflake, AWS) and integration platforms (e.g., SnapLogic, REST APIs).
  • Demonstrated ability to translate ambiguous business requirements into scalable Reltio data models and survivorship workflows.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills, capable of driving technical projects from concept to production and explaining complex MDM concepts to diverse stakeholders.
  • Independent judgment skills to determine methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for measuring success.
  • Ability to recognize and resolve situations of substantial significance in a field of expertise or knowledge.
  • In-depth knowledge of Microsoft Office products. Examples include Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.
  • Must be meticulously organized and have a masterful inquisitive mindset.
