What is a mathematical programming?

A Mathematical Programming job involves using mathematical models, optimization techniques, and algorithms to solve complex problems in various industries. Professionals in this field work on tasks such as resource allocation, scheduling, risk analysis, and decision-making processes. They utilize programming languages like Python, R, or specialized optimization software to develop efficient solutions. Common industries that hire for this role include finance, logistics, engineering, and data science. These jobs require strong analytical skills, mathematical knowledge, and the ability to translate real-world problems into mathematical formulations.

What are the typical responsibilities of someone working in mathematical programming?

Professionals in Mathematical Programming are primarily responsible for developing, implementing, and analyzing mathematical models to solve complex optimization problems in areas like logistics, finance, or engineering. Their daily tasks often include formulating models, coding algorithms, running simulations, and interpreting results to advise decision-makers. Mathematical Programmers frequently collaborate with cross-functional teams such as data analysts, domain experts, and project managers to tailor solutions to organizational needs. This hands-on, collaborative role offers continuous learning opportunities and exposure to a wide variety of real-world problems, making it a dynamic and rewarding career choice.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in mathematical programming, and why are they important?

To excel in Mathematical Programming, candidates typically need a strong background in mathematics, operations research, and computer science, often supported by a relevant bachelor's or master's degree. Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, MATLAB, or specialized optimization software like CPLEX and Gurobi is highly valued in this field. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and clear communication skills help professionals interpret complex data and effectively present solutions. These skills are vital for developing efficient algorithms and optimization models that solve real-world business or engineering challenges.

Job description

Overview

Create value at TC Transcontinental.

At TC Transcontinental, we've got it made, and that's because of the expertise of our team.

We have been driving innovation since 1976.

Founded 50 years ago and 4,000 employees strong, Transcontinental Inc. (TSX: TCL.A TCL.B), known under the TC Transcontinental brand, is a Canadian retail marketing services company, Canada's largest printer, and the Canadian leader in French-language educational publishing. Driven by the vision of a more informed, educated and prosperous society, TC Transcontinental propels its clients' success across the retail, education, book and information industries. With agility, creativity and boldness, we design and deliver innovative, high-value products and services.

We are looking for an AI/ML Engineer to work on building a multi-tenant, AI-driven promotional content platform for our customers.

This is a hybrid position, at our Mississauga offices.

This position is currently open and reflects a new position created to support organizational growth.

The salary range for this position is $110,000 to $125,000 per year, commensurate with experience, education, and internal equity. This range is provided to ensure clarity and promote equitable access to employment opportunities.

Responsibilities

When your actions lead to success:

Engineering
  • Design and build machine learning and generative AI components that integrate with our data platforms and infrastructure, built for automation, reliability, and operational efficiency.
  • Write clean, maintainable production code for our ML and LLM services and keep them straightforward to deploy and scale.
  • Take part in the ongoing development of our existing AI solutions: implementing changes, improving the architecture, and reviewing pull requests.
  • Work with large, real-world datasets, from extensive document collections to promotional product data.
Business rules and configuration
  • Analyze incoming business requirements and translate them into the platform's rules and configurations.
  • Work out data conventions from real feeds when stakeholders cannot fully articulate them.
  • Spot conflicts between rules, propose trade-offs, and work with stakeholders to keep the overall rule system coherent.
  • Configure how content is rendered and laid out so it matches each of the customers style guides and production artwork.
Prompt engineering and LLM quality
  • Design and iterate on LLM prompts and few-shot examples for copywriting, brand extraction, and translation.
  • Evaluate prompt and model changes systematically so quality improvements are measured, not assumed by feel.
  • Maintain the curated reference data that grounds LLM outputs.
Validation and growth
  • Test generated output against real data, review it with content and business stakeholders, and iterate until the results meet the bar.
  • Keep learning: explore new techniques and advanced AI topics with a team that shares knowledge freely.
Qualifications

When your expertise drives us:

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in computer science, statistics, mathematics, engineering, or a related field
  • 5+ years of professional experience in software engineering
  • 2+ years of experience with GenAi/LLMs
  • Solid grounding in machine learning and deep learning
  • Strong Python knowledge
  • Hands-on experience with LLMs: prompt design, few-shot examples, structured outputs, and evaluating the effect of prompt and model changes
  • The ability to turn ambiguous business rules into precise, maintainable logic
  • You care about good software design, notice the small details in code and API design, and take pride in building systems that are robust and scale well
  • You hold yourself accountable for what you ship and communicate clearly and with empathy, including with non-technical stakeholders
Preferred qualifications
  • Strong asset: A research background or publication record.
  • Working familiarity with .NET (C#)
  • Hands-on experience with PyTorch, TensorFlow, JAX, LangGraph, or a comparable library
  • Experience building and scaling data-intensive systems
  • Experience with templating and configuration-driven systems (Jinja2, YAML)
  • Azure ecosystem: Azure OpenAI, Blob Storage, Service Bus, Key Vault
  • ML experiment tracking and evaluation tooling such as MLflow
  • Familiarity with print production or design automation workflows
  • French language skills (our output is bilingual, English and French) and retail merchandising domain knowledge
