Job Summary
The Graduate Teaching Assistant (Level 1) is the first stage of a possible two-year GTA Pathway. A structured academic progression designed to develop graduate students into confident, credentialed college educators. In this role, the Level 1 assistant serves as a mentored member of the teaching team, working alongside a supervising faculty member to support laboratory and discussion sections in introductory first year courses. The position is not independent instruction; it is intentional preparation for it.
Positions are available across three broad areas: the natural sciences, computing and mathematics, and the humanities and social sciences. High-enrollment first year introductory courses in biology, chemistry, physics, computer science, mathematics, composition, and psychology are among the most common placements.
Promotion to an instructor of record (Graduate Teaching Assistant Level 2) is not guaranteed and is reserved for graduate students with at least 18 graduate hours in discipline.
Effort is distributed across three functional areas totaling 29 hours per week:

• Instructional Support (60%)
  Prepare and support assigned laboratory or discussion sections, including setup, materials management, and safety compliance in lab science courses.
  Provide in-class assistance to students during faculty-led instruction.
  Coordinate with the faculty supervisor to ensure section readiness and alignment with course objectives.
• Assessment and Feedback (30%)
  Grade assignments, quizzes, and examinations using rubrics and standards established by the faculty of record.
  Provide timely, constructive written feedback that supports student learning.
  Develop consistency and sound judgment in academic assessment under faculty guidance.
• Student Support and Professional Development (10%)
  Hold regular tutoring and office hours to provide direct, supported contact with students outside of class.
  Meet regularly with the supervising faculty mentor to review teaching development, discuss student progress, and reflect on instructional practice.
  Participate in required GTA training and professional development activities coordinated by the Graduate School.

Required Qualifications
To be considered for a graduate assistantship at the University of West Georgia (UWG), students must meet the following criteria:

• Be fully admitted to a graduate degree program at UWG. Please note: Students admitted provisionally are not eligible for assistantship positions.
• Hold a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
• Be enrolled full-time in a UWG graduate program during the assistantship period.
• Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 in all previous and current graduate coursework and remain in good academic standing.
• Meet eligibility requirements for employment in the United States.

Preferred Qualifications

• Strong organizational and time management skills
• Must have a degree in either one of the following fields: Natural Sciences, Computing and Mathematics, or Humanities and Social Sciences
• License driver

Proposed Salary

• A monthly stipend of $1,400.00 per month
• A tuition waiver, reducing your semester rate to $25 plus mandatory fees as long as you are employed in your assistanship

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Working conditions vary by placement. Most assignments take place in a standard classroom, laboratory, or office setting.

• Assistants in lab science placements should expect extended periods of standing during sections and occasional lifting of instructional materials or equipment, typically not exceeding 25 pounds.
• All other placements are primarily sedentary, with standard computer and desk work during grading and office hours
• Ability to drive
