Job description

Summary

Applications Engineers are the “expert users” of QED’s polishing and metrology products. Their main responsibilities are providing process support for existing customers (including basic & advanced training, process optimization and troubleshooting, etc), and providing Sales with technical support (capability analysis reports, tech support during remote/live customer meetings, etc)

Based in Rochester, New York, QED Technologies has built a reputation for producing high quality polishing and metrology products based on revolutionary, patented technology, advanced computer numerical control machines and world-class software to provide shop-ready solutions for nearly any precision optics manufacturing need. QED offers state-of-the-art Magnetorheological Finishing (MRF) and Subaperture Stitching Interferometry (SSI) solutions that are designed to meet the needs of advanced optics manufacturers by increasing production speed and yield while decreasing costs. Every QED employee assumes a personal role in ensuring that we deliver a quality product with outstanding customer service throughout the life cycle of the application.

What will you do on a day-to-day basis?

  • You will travel across the globe, performing polishing/metrology validation, acceptance testing and new operator training activities for new machine installations at customer sites.
  • You will support the Sales team by performing capability analyses – determining if/how our products can meet the requirements requested by our customers, either in the form of:
    • Simulations of capability, culminating in a report
    • Actual proving out of capability through polishing and metrology demonstrations on customer provided optics. These can be remote (customers send parts) or live, with customer present.
  • You will support Sales meetings with customers, either remotely or in person, to provide technical information about our products
  • You will provide software and process support to existing customer base via remote or on-site support activities. This includes use our CRM software for logging/documenting/tracking customer requests and problems.
  • You will drive product improvement by communicating “voice of the customer” feedback to Engineering, whether direct from a customer of from personal use of the equipment during Applications activities
  • You will be involved with continuous improvement engineering project teams, especially those that are focused on improving components of our existing polishing and metrology products.
  • You will support trade show exhibitions including set-up, demonstration, and discussion with potential customers.
  • You will participate in technical meetings, conferences, seminars, and training sessions to stay apprised of new developments in field. You will write papers and present poster/presentations related to new results and/or capabilities of QED’s technology.

What will make you successful in this role?

You will have a Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) or Master's degree (M.S.) in Optics, Physics or related field (or equivalent); or four to six years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience in optical fabrication is helpful (generating, grinding, lapping, polishing, sub-aperture polishing, ion beam figuring, magnetorheological finishing, interferometry, other forms of optical testing of plano, spheres, aspheres).

Experience in data analysis, experimental design, statistical analysis, and frequency analysis is critical.

A working knowledge of mathematical analysis software and MS office (Excel, Power Point, Word, etc.) is essential for this job.

Finally, excellent written and oral communication skills are required, as frequent interaction with customers is a key responsibility.
