Cloud Operations & Innovation (CO+I) is the engine behind Microsoft's cloud. This infrastructure is designed, operated, and continuously improved by teams of deep technical experts who safeguard reliability, trust, and scale.
IT Process and Standards (ITPS), a team within CO+I Core Datacenter Services (CDS), envisions a unified, automated approach to managing IT operations processes and standards across Microsoft's global datacenter fleet. This ensures the ability to maintain and restore IT capacity efficiently and effectively to meet cloud service availability targets at scale. ITPS defines and evolves processes that underpin datacenter IT operations, including breakfix workflows, service transition, planning and scheduling, and IT service management orchestration. By equipping operations teams with the right tools and procedures, ITPS supports innovation and growth across offerings such as Azure AI, high-performance computing clusters, and mission-critical workloads.
We are seeking a highly skilled Data Engineer to join our team within ITPS. This role is critical for formulating business problems, exploring and analyzing data, and designing and testing predictive and forecasting models. The Data Engineer will identify opportunities for machine learning and predictive analysis, and communicate effectively to influence data-driven decisions across the organization. The ideal candidate will have strong technical expertise in advanced analytics, machine learning, and software development, as well as excellent business acumen and collaborative communication skills.
Responsibilities
  • Formulate business problems and translate them into actionable data science projects.
  • Explore, analyze, and centralize data to supply meaningful insights and create a single version of the truth.
  • Design, prototype, implement, and test descriptive, predictive, forecasting, and causal inference models.
  • Identify and action IT operations return to capacity success improvement; perform defect analysis, quantify opportunities, and set targets.
  • Partner and collaborate with teams to identify opportunities for machine learning and predictive analysis.
  • Build and deploy visualizations that deliver insights to decision-makers at all organizational levels.
  • Communicate effectively with technical and non-technical audiences, contributing modeling expertise as a team player.
  • Influence across disciplines to ensure data-driven decisions and solve critical problems for customers.Mentor others and foster a culture of continuous learning.
  • Stay current with advances in the data science industry.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in Computer Science, Math, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years experience in business analytics, data science, software development, data modeling, or data engineering OR Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Math, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field AND
  • 4+ years experience in business analytics, data science, software development, data modeling, or data engineering OR equivalent experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in computer science, Math, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field AND
  • 6+ years' experience in business analytics, data science, software development, data modeling, or data engineering OR Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Math, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field AND
  • 8+ years' experience in business analytics, data science, software development, data modeling, or data engineering OR equivalent experience.
  • 2+ years' experience with data governance, data compliance and/or data security.

Background Check Requirements:
Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Data Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $119,800.00 - $234,700.00 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $160,200.00 - $261,000.00 per year.
