Job description

The Business Essentials Unit in the School of Business at Virginia Commonwealth University is recruiting a pool of applicants for adjunct faculty positions on an ongoing basis for adjunct teaching positions. Should funding for such adjunct teaching positions become available, the Undergraduate Studies Office will contact persons in the pool whose credentials match our teaching needs. This pool will be accessed only when an opening arises.

This course provides an intuitive approach to algebra and introductory calculus, with an emphasis on concepts, applications and problems related to business. Starting with a review of functions, the course will explore the use of algebra to formulate and solve problems. Students will learn how to use matrices to solve introductory linear programming problems. Additionally, students will be introduced to limits, continuity, techniques of differentiation and integration as it applies to algebraic, exponential and logarithmic functions, and optimization with an emphasis on applications in business. Students will build their understanding of mathematical models and how to use functions and data to solve realโ€‘world problems. Instruction will include the use of spreadsheets as a calculation and graphing tool.

Duties & Responsibilities

As an Adjunct Instructor in the Business Essentials Unit in the School of Business, you will help support the School of Business strategic plan that focuses on creativity in the curriculum. Instructors will be expected to hold regular, online office hours.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Masterโ€™s degree in business, mathematics, or closely related discipline.
  • Teaching experience in higher education or high school.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from various backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as an employee at VCU.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Business, Mathematics or a closely related discipline at the time the appointment begins.
  • ABD candidates will be considered.
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching higher education mathematics courses.
  • Experience developing and deploying successful mathematics courses.
