Construction Materials Project Manager

S&ME is looking for a motivated and passionate Construction Materials Project Manager to join our Construction Services team in Charleston, South Carolina. Join us at S&ME!


As a Construction Materials Project Manager, you'll lead the delivery of construction materials testing, special inspections, and technical consulting services for a variety of projects. Responsibilities include managing field operations, reviewing and interpreting testing results, developing reports and proposals, and supporting the growth and development of junior team members. Your knowledge of soils, concrete, asphalt, and masonry testing will be key to ensuring quality project execution and strengthening client relationships.


Your Day-to-Day:

  • Field Investigations & Site Assessment: Lead and support subsurface exploration activities, evaluate potential impacts to data reliability, recommend modifications to project scope when needed, and coordinate laboratory testing programs for collected materials.
  • Construction Monitoring & Inspections: Carry out field inspections and construction monitoring activities, maintain accurate documentation of site conditions, and provide guidance to junior staff on testing and inspection procedures involving soils, concrete, asphalt, and masonry materials.
  • Engineering Analysis & Quality Review: Perform technical evaluations and intermediate-level engineering calculations, assist in training junior personnel on analytical procedures, and review laboratory results to verify consistency, accuracy, and overall data quality.
  • Documentation & Project Support: Develop detailed technical reports and daily field summaries, contribute to proposal preparation through project research and site evaluations, and assist with drafting project scopes under the direction of senior professionals.
  • Client Engagement & Office Growth: Support client communication and relationship-building efforts, participate in networking and professional association activities, assist with business development initiatives, and contribute to marketing and operational growth efforts within the office.

Who We're Looking For:

We're looking for a candidate who thrives in a role that blends handson fieldwork with analytical problemsolving and direct client interaction. The ideal person brings strong technical judgment, clear communication skills, and the ability to balance multiple priorities while contributing positively to a fastpaced, collaborative team environment.


What You Bring:

  • A Bachelor's degree in construction management or a similar technical field required, OR equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum 6 years of experience in project management of construction materials testing/inspections of soil, concrete, masonry, and/or asphalt
  • Certifications: American Concrete Institute (ACI): Field Testing Grade I; Strength Testing Technician; Laboratory Technician International Code Council (ICC): Special Inspector (Reinforced Concrete, Masonry, Soils)
  • Excellent business and technical writing skills
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Must be able to effectively lead teams with varying responsibilities and tasks

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:

You are willing and able to perform the physical demands of this position with the use of Company-provided Personal Protective Equipment, such as:

  • Working outdoors the majority of the time in varying weather conditions
  • Walking over rough, uneven terrain and standing for potentially long periods
  • Routinely lifting and carrying 40-50lbs (field/laboratory samples and equipment)
  • Working outside of normal business hours when necessary
