The Position:
Under the direction of the AASHTO Laboratory Area Manager (ALAM) the Materials Testing Supervisor is responsible for monitoring daily processes and managing a team of laboratory technicians. Success is defined as the timely delivery of requested tests, efficient use of equipment, proper training and development of personnel, fostering a team environment, ability to adapt quickly to change, minimization of risk and compliance with specifications, organizational policies, procedures, and ethical standards.
  • Continuous quality improvement of all lab processes.
  • Collaborate with the ALAM to ensure MTC is operating efficiently.
  • Create, maintain, and communicate laboratory schedule to appropriate stakeholders.
  • Create mix design blends.
  • Establish and maintain a positive working relationship with all customers.
  • Ensure testing is completed by the dates requested by our customers.
  • Perform accurate and timely billing of all testing.
  • Perform testing as needed to meet customer requirements.
  • Ensures all test data for accuracy and critically evaluate results.
  • Verify that all mix designs meet or exceed job specifications prior to submittal.
  • Be an expert with the operation and maintenance of all laboratory equipment.
  • Ensure compliance by utilizing SOPs, test methods and safety protocol.
  • Ensure equipment is inventoried, calibrated, and all documentation is available as needed.
  • Ensure lab is stocked with supplies.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot laboratory equipment to ensure efficient operation.
  • Maintain MTC by regularly cleaning and inspecting all areas of the lab.
  • Maintain AASHTO accreditation of the laboratory.
  • Address staff performance concerns and issues in a timely manner.
  • Assist ALAM with hiring as needed.
  • Develop direct report capability and provide support for career development.
  • Train all lab personnel in their assigned tasks and ensure they maintain required certifications.
  • Assist with research and development.
  • Ensure technician schedule is efficient and appropriate for workload.

Requirements:
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Demonstrates problem solving skills.
  • Proven ability to effectively train, evaluate and communicate with others.
  • Proven ability to oversee multiple and/or complex projects simultaneously.
  • Must be proficient with computers, the Microsoft suite of programs, and an understanding of current technology trends.
  • Must demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Valid Driver's License and satisfactory driving record.
  • Able to lift 50 - 75 lbs. and stand for long periods of time.

Preferred Skills:
  • 1 + years' experience in inspection and testing of road and paving materials and construction; satisfactorily directed testing or inspection services, or both, of road and paving materials is acceptable.
  • Holds or is qualified for a current WisDOT HMA-TPC (WI), IDOT - HMA II (IL), or MDOT (MI) certification.
