Material Handler Overview

The Material Handler is responsible for safely and efficiently moving, staging, and storing raw and finished materials and large fabricated components across departments to support production, quality, and inbound and outbound logistics. This role operates a range of equipment—including 5k/7k/10k forklifts, a lull (telehandler), overhead cranes, and heavy-capacity forklifts (with an emphasis on 65k or larger)—to load and unload semis, dry vans, drop-deck, and lowboy trailers. Duties also include; verify shipments; and maintain accurate material location and proper documentation. Success in this position requires excellent situational awareness, disciplined adherence to safety standards, and proactive communication with the Logistics Manager, Site Manager, Department Leads, and Quality Control (QC) to keep work flowing on schedule. Experience preferred 3-4 years.

  • Safely operate 5k, 7k, 10k forklifts, 65k+ heavy-capacity forklifts, and a lull (telehandler) to move large, oversized, and high-value parts between Fabrication, Machining, Welding, Paint, QC, and Services.
  • Utilize overhead cranes, rigging, and appropriate attachments (fork extensions, booms, slings) to handle large components while protecting finishes and critical surfaces.
  • Load/unload semis, drop-deck, dry vans and lowboy trailers; validate counts, part IDs, weights, and packaging against purchase orders, pick lists, and BOLs.
  • Stage outbound shipments by job, destination, and carrier and packaging
  • Collaborate with the Logistics Manager to align shipping schedules, carrier arrivals, special handling needs, and documentation.
  • Perform pre-shift equipment inspections (forklifts, telehandler, crane/rigging) and immediately report defects to manager.
  • Maintain clean, organized loading and unloading areas, aisles, and storage zones, proper stacking, and safe racking practices.
  • Adhere to all workplace safety procedures, including PPE, load charts, hand signals, spotter use, pinch-point controls, and lockout/tagout where applicable.
  • Uphold Frontier Technologies' and Gexpro Services' standards for quality, safety, and on-time performance.
  • Other job duties as directed by management.

Qualifications

  • Possess a High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • 3-4 years of experience material handling and driving lifts, preference in heavy capacity forklifts.
  • Organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the job.
  • Ability to work overtime.
  • Able to read and interpret work instructions, fluent in both written and spoken English
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Passion for doing a job well.
  • A "self-motivated" team player.
  • Able to work effectively in South Alabama climate conditions.
  • Able to stand for long periods of time, crawl, squat, and climb without tiring easily.
  • Able to lift 50 pounds with reasonable accommodation.
