What is material management?

Material management is the process of planning, organizing, and controlling the flow of materials from their initial purchase through internal operations to the service point through distribution. The goal is to ensure that the right materials are available at the right time, in the right quantity, and at the right cost, while minimizing waste and storage costs. It involves procurement, inventory management, warehousing, and distribution, all of which contribute to the efficient functioning of supply chains in industries such as manufacturing, construction, and healthcare.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in material management, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Material Management often encounter challenges such as supply chain disruptions, inventory inaccuracies, and fluctuating demand. Addressing these issues typically involves implementing robust inventory tracking systems, maintaining clear communication with suppliers, and using data analytics to anticipate and respond to changes in demand. Additionally, collaborating closely with purchasing, production, and logistics teams helps ensure materials are available when needed and reduces the risk of bottlenecks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a material management professional, and why are they important?

To thrive in Material Management, you need a solid understanding of supply chain processes, inventory control, and procurement, often backed by a degree in business, logistics, or a related field. Familiarity with enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems like SAP or Oracle, and relevant certifications such as APICS CPIM, are highly valuable. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help professionals coordinate inventory and vendor relationships efficiently. These skills ensure optimal inventory levels, cost control, and smooth operations within the supply chain.

Essential Functions

  • Material Requisition Management: Generate, review, and authorize material requisitions within the MRP system based on master production schedules, engineering changes, and inventory thresholds to ensure uninterrupted supply.
  • Materials Process Creation: Author, establish, and document Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the plant's foundational material control processes, including receiving, material handling, material delivery, and kitting workflows.
  • MRP Implementation & Data Integrity: Partner with Supply Chain and IT teams to map Bills of Materials (BOM), audit inventory master data, and establish time-phased planning parameters during system implementation.
  • Production Stand-Up Coordination: Translate engineering drawings, prototypes, and initial blueprints into actionable contractor-furnished material requirements to ensure seamless production lines kickoff.
  • Work Order Management: Generate, release, and manage production work orders within the MRP system to align with the master manufacturing schedule.
  • Material Issuance & Tracking: Oversee the accurate issuance, tracking, and staging of materials from inventory to the production floor, maintaining strict chain of custody.
  • Inventory Control & Cycle Counting: Establish and execute a robust cycle count program to identify variances, reconcile data discrepancies, and drive toward a 98%+ inventory accuracy target.
  • Program Allocation & Reporting: Monitor and control material allocations dedicated to specific defense contracts, ensuring materials are correctly charged to appropriate program codes and generating status reports.

Bachelor's Degree and minimum 4 years of prior relevant experience. Graduate Degree and a minimum of 2 years of prior related experience. In lieu of a degree, minimum of 8 years of prior related experience.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience: Proven experience in material planning, inventory control, or supply chain management within a defense or aerospace manufacturing environment.
  • Systems: Strong working knowledge of MRP/ERP systems and automated inventory management tools.
  • Compliance: Familiarity with defense procurement protocols, government property management regulations, and strict quality compliance standards.
  • Skills: Ability to interpret engineering blueprints, schematics, and Bills of Materials (BOM).
