General Purpose

The Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology (MCB) at the University of Guelph invites applications for a Teaching Coordinator with expertise in mammalian cell culture, immunology, and laboratory-based biomedical education.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic and growing department that is making significant investments in undergraduate and graduate education in immunology, infection biology, and biomedical sciences. The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting the Department's newly launched Microbiology and Immunology major and the Master of Applied Molecular and Health Sciences (MAMHS), a new course-based master's program focused on biotechnology, therapeutic development, vaccinology, and precision medicine.

The Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology is one of Canada's leading departments in biomedical and molecular sciences, with strengths spanning immunology, microbiology, infection biology, cancer biology, neuroscience, structural biology, bioinformatics, and cell biology.

The Department is investing heavily in experiential learning infrastructure, including a new $500,000 tissue culture teaching laboratory, which will provide students with hands-on training in mammalian cell culture, immunology, stem cell biology, and advanced biomedical techniques.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Teaching Coordinator is responsible for coordinating, delivering, and continuously improving undergraduate and selected graduate laboratory teaching activities in molecular biology, microbiology, immunology, and cell biology. 

The successful candidate will: 

  • Coordinate laboratory-based undergraduate and graduate courses. 
  • Lead the operation and maintenance of the Department's tissue culture teaching facility. 
  • Develop and implement modern laboratory exercises and experiential learning activities. 
  • Train and supervise graduate teaching assistants. 
  • Support faculty members in course and laboratory delivery. 
  • Contribute to curriculum innovation and educational excellence across the Department. 
  • Undergraduate and graduate laboratory course coordination 
  • Mammalian cell culture and sterile tissue culture techniques 
  • Immunology and host-pathogen teaching laboratories 
  • Laboratory safety and biosafety oversight 
  • GTA training and supervision 
  • Course material and CourseLink development 
  • Curriculum innovation and experiential learning 
  • Development of new teaching modules aligned with advances in biomedical science 
Requirements

Applicants must possess: 

  • An MSc in Cell Biology, Immunology, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Biotechnology, or a closely related discipline. 
  • Minimum 18-months of relevant experience. 

Preference will be given to candidates with: 

  • A PhD in a relevant biomedical field.
  • Extensive experience in mammalian cell culture and sterile technique. 
  • Experience with immunological and molecular biology techniques. 
  • Experience teaching or mentoring students in laboratory settings. 
  • Strong organizational and communication skills. 

Assets 

Experience in one or more of the following areas would be considered an asset: 

  • Stem cell culture 
  • Flow cytometry 
  • Fluorescence or confocal microscopy 
  • Host-pathogen interaction models 
  • Biomanufacturing 
  • Therapeutic cell engineering
