Join a team comprising Engineering and Legal disciplines to provide a range of services and guidance regarding intellectual property (IP) to Qualcomm's business units. Candidate will work closely with Qualcomm's research, development, and standardization engineers.
This role requires full-time onsite work in San Diego, CA (5 days per week).
Minimum Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Information Systems, Computer Science, or related field and 6+ years of Systems Engineering or related work experience.
OR
Master's degree in Engineering, Information Systems, Computer Science, or related field and 5+ years of Systems Engineering or related work experience.
OR
PhD in Engineering, Information Systems, Computer Science, or related field and 4+ years of Systems Engineering or related work experience.
The responsibilities of this role include:
  • Analyze Qualcomm's 5G and 6G patent portfolio to assess applicability to communication and computing standards and products.
  • Develop and execute IP strategy to build and strengthen Qualcomm's future IP portfolio across cellular, computing, and AI-driven technologies.
  • Provide IP advice and consulting to all Qualcomm departments.
  • Help defend Qualcomm's product and business model against third party legal attacks.
  • Provide technical and strategic support to Qualcomm customers against legal attacks.
  • Define methodologies and technical frameworks to demonstrate patent infringement; provide expert guidance, review, and oversight for lab, field, and simulation-based testing performed by execution teams; influence test and automation strategy; and analyze, document, and present results for technical and legal use.
  • Prototype and validate AI/ML- and LLM-enabled patent review workflows by defining problem statements and success criteria, proof-of-concept using appropriate tools and software techniques, and translating validated prototypes into actionable requirements and specifications for scaling and integration by software and operations teams, supported through technical review and iteration.
  • Assess technical and strategic value of 3rd party patent portfolios for potential acquisition.
  • Help develop Qualcomm business and technology IP strategies across cellular, computing, and AI domains.
  • Study industry technology trends, including AI/ML, edge intelligence, and software-defined wireless systems.
  • Recommend technical direction to Qualcomm's various engineering and product groups based on Standards evolution, system analysis, and IP considerations.
  • Prior exposure to patents is preferred but not required.
  • Experience in defining, implementing or testing standardized wireless technologies.
  • Critical thinking and creative problem solving skills.
  • Ability to conduct investigative research with minimum supervision.
  • Ability and interest to learn new technologies quickly.
  • Participate in patent review boards and standards IP disclosure review boards.

Additional Preferred Qualifications:
  • 8+ years experience are required in 5G systems, LTE (FDD and TDD), LTE- unlicensed/LAA/MulteFire and associated cellular based standards
  • 8+ years experience working with various protocol layers (e.g. PHY, MAC, RRC, TCP/IP, IMS) for systems of interest to Qualcomm. 3GPP RAN1 RAN2 experience preferred.
  • Experience in wireless technologies such as WLAN (802.11n/ac/ax/be/bn, etc.), 3G (UMTS), and cellular/WiFi-based positioning technologies.
  • Self-motivation and perseverance.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with non-experts in the field.
  • Flexibility to make quick adjustment in a fast-changing environment.
  • A wide network of contacts in the QC engineering community.

Education:
  • Masters - Electrical Engineering, Masters - Computer Science, Masters - Information Systems
  • Additional Preferred Education Requirements: Doctorate, Electrical Engineering

Work Experiences:
  • 2+ years of work experience in a role requiring interaction with senior leadership (e.g., Director level and above)
  • 3+ years experience working in a large matrixed organization.
  • 12+ years Systems Engineering or related work experience.

Physical Requirements

Pay range and Other Compensation & Benefits:
$162,600.00 - $244,000.00
The above pay scale reflects the broad, minimum to maximum, pay scale for this job code for the location for which it has been posted. Even more importantly, please note that salary is only one component of total compensation at Qualcomm.
