What is a master data steward?

A Master Data Steward is a professional responsible for overseeing the accuracy, consistency, and security of an organization's critical business data, known as master data. This includes data about customers, products, suppliers, and other key business entities. Master Data Stewards ensure that data standards are maintained, resolve data quality issues, and collaborate with various departments to implement data governance policies. Their role is crucial for supporting business operations, analytics, and compliance with regulations.

How does a master data steward typically collaborate with other departments to ensure data consistency and quality?

Master Data Stewards work closely with teams across the organization, such as IT, business operations, and compliance, to define data standards and resolve discrepancies. They often participate in cross-functional meetings to understand data needs and pain points, and may lead training sessions to promote best practices in data management. Effective collaboration ensures that master data remains accurate, up-to-date, and aligned with business objectives, reducing operational risks and improving decision-making.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a master data steward, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Master Data Steward, you need a solid understanding of data management principles, data governance, and business processes, often supported by a degree in information systems or a related field. Familiarity with data management tools like SAP MDG, Informatica, or Collibra, as well as knowledge of data quality frameworks and sometimes relevant certifications (e.g., CDMP), is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and excellent communication skills help you collaborate across departments and ensure data integrity.
