What is a mason tender?

Mason Tenders are construction laborers who assist masons, bricklayers, and other skilled tradespeople on job sites. Their duties typically include mixing and carrying mortar, setting up scaffolding, preparing materials, cleaning work areas, and ensuring that the necessary supplies are available for the masons. They play a vital support role, helping the workflow run smoothly and efficiently. Mason Tenders need physical stamina, attention to detail, and a basic understanding of construction safety procedures.

What does a mason tender do?

A mason tender is an onsite assistant to a stonemason. The primary responsibilities of a mason tender are to maintain tools, transport materials, and keep the job site clean. You assist the mason in maintaining, repairing, and constructing surfaces and structures made of bricks and stones. Your duties include helping lay tile, preparing and applying grout, and following all plans and blueprints to complete the project. Some mason tenders work for stonemasons within a specialized field, such as marble setters or brick masons. The most important job qualifications are good physical fitness, the ability to follow directions, and strong tool skills. Many mason tenders use the position to gain experience to become a career stonemason.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mason tender, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mason Tender, you need a solid understanding of construction site safety, masonry materials handling, and basic building techniques, typically gained through on-the-job training or apprenticeship. Familiarity with tools such as mortar mixers, scaffolding systems, and wheelbarrows is essential, and OSHA safety certification is often preferred. Strong physical stamina, teamwork, and attention to detail are crucial soft skills for supporting masons efficiently. These skills and qualities are vital for ensuring safe, timely, and high-quality completion of masonry projects.

What are some typical challenges mason tenders face on the job, and how can they prepare for them?

Mason Tenders often encounter challenges such as working in changing weather conditions, handling heavy materials, and maintaining efficiency in a fast-paced environment. To prepare, it's important to develop physical stamina, stay informed about job site safety protocols, and communicate effectively with masons and other crew members. Being proactive in organizing materials and tools can also help manage time pressures and keep the project running smoothly.

Job description

The Opportunity

This is not just a job. It is a craft. As a Mason at BMI, you are the skilled professional whose hands shape every wall, arch, and structure we build. Your workmanship is what our clients see, what our reputation is built on, and what will still be standing long after the scaffolding comes down.

We are looking for Masons who bring precision, pride, and professionalism to every course they lay. Whether you are setting brick, block, or stone — you understand that quality is not optional at BMI. It is the standard.

What You’ll Do

Craftsmanship & Execution

  • Lay brick, block, and stone according to plans, specifications, and layout lines
  • Read and interpret blueprints, shop drawings, and field measurements
  • Maintain proper alignment, plumb, level, and joint consistency on every course
  • Ensure workmanship meets or exceeds BMI quality standards and project specifications
  • Maintain appropriate production pace without sacrificing safety or quality
  • Protect finished work from weather, damage, and contamination throughout the project

Safety & Jobsite Standards

  • Follow all OSHA regulations and BMI safety protocols without exception
  • Wear required PPE at all times and enforce the same standard with those around you
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area throughout the workday
  • Immediately report hazards, unsafe conditions, or near-miss incidents to the Foreman
  • Work safely on scaffolding, elevated platforms, and in all weather conditions

Team Collaboration

  • Communicate material needs clearly and in advance to Mason Tenders and the Foreman
  • Provide clear direction to Mason Tenders to maintain steady, uninterrupted workflow
  • Support the training and development of apprentices and less experienced masons
  • Contribute positively to crew morale, professionalism, and jobsite culture
  • Participate in daily coordination with the Foreman and project team

Equipment & Tools

  • Maintain, clean, and protect personal hand tools and company equipment
  • Operate power tools and equipment only as trained and authorized
  • Report damaged or defective tools and equipment promptly
  • Minimize material waste and protect all project materials from damage or loss
