What is a marketing operations manager?

A marketing operations manager supervises marketing department staff to maintain productivity and smooth operations. Unlike a marketing project manager who focuses on a particular marketing campaign, a marketing operations manager oversees the overall marketing department and ensures the staff meets their goals. Job duties include evaluating market trends to develop new marketing strategies, creating department goals, delegating project tasks to employees, and training new marketing employees. Qualifications for this career include a bachelor’s or master’s degree in marketing, business administration, or a related field, extensive marketing experience, and leadership skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a marketing operations manager?

To thrive as a Marketing Operations Manager, you need expertise in marketing strategy, data analysis, project management, and a bachelor’s degree in marketing or a related field. Familiarity with marketing automation platforms (like HubSpot or Marketo), CRM systems, and analytics tools is typically required, along with certifications such as Salesforce or Google Analytics. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help drive cross-functional collaboration and process optimization. These skills ensure seamless marketing execution, data-driven decision-making, and alignment between marketing initiatives and overall business objectives.

What are some common challenges faced by marketing operations managers when aligning marketing technology with organizational goals?

Marketing Operations Managers often encounter challenges when ensuring that marketing technology stacks effectively support broader business objectives. Integrating new tools with existing systems, maintaining data accuracy across platforms, and securing buy-in from cross-functional teams can be complex. Additionally, staying updated with rapidly evolving marketing technologies while balancing cost and utility requires ongoing attention. Successful Marketing Operations Managers proactively communicate with stakeholders, regularly evaluate tech performance, and foster a culture of continuous improvement to address these hurdles.

Job description

Machine Learning University (MLU) is leading internal education in Generative AI, Agentic AI and Responsible AI, accelerating Amazon-wide AI transformation. We are seeking a detail-oriented, customer-obsessed Program Manager to drive marketing operations and cross-functional initiatives that amplify MLU's reach and engagement across Amazon's technical workforce.
MLU's Program Manager, Marketing Operations is the operational backbone of marketing execution - managing campaigns end-to-end, coordinating cross-functional dependencies, designing scalable processes, and ensuring on-time delivery across multiple workstreams.

You will partner closely with instruction, operations, and engineering to deliver high-quality marketing programs that drive awareness, enrollment, and community engagement for MLU.
The ideal candidate is someone who excels at stakeholder coordination and brings a structured approach to managing complex, multi-channel programs - equally comfortable building a project plan from scratch and diving deep into operational metrics to identify improvements. Beyond core marketing responsibilities, this role provides cross-functional support to operations including course launch coordination, communications copywriting, and event logistics.

Key job responsibilities
(Deliver Results) Own end-to-end program management for marketing campaigns, events, and brand initiatives - from requirements gathering through execution, measurement, and retrospective.
(Ownership) Manage the marketing operations calendar, ensuring cross-functional alignment on timelines, dependencies, and deliverables across campaigns, events, and product launches.
(Invent and Simplify) Design and implement scalable marketing workflows and processes that improve efficiency as the program grows in volume and complexity.

Drive adoption of automation tools (e.g., AI-assisted copywriting, automated recurring communications) to reduce cycle time on repetitive tasks.
(Think Big) Support strategic marketing initiatives including potential program rebranding, community engagement programs, and large-scale events by managing project plans, stakeholder coordination, and go-to-market timelines.
(Earns Trust) Coordinate across MLU teams (operations, product, instruction) and partner organizations to align marketing efforts with broader program goals and ensure consistent brand application

(Insist on High Standards) Maintain brand consistency across all marketing touchpoints by managing the brand portal, standards documentation, and creative review processes.
(Dive Deep) Track and report on marketing program performance metrics. Analyze campaign data to identify optimization opportunities and contribute to weekly/monthly reporting on marketing impact.
