What is a Maritime Cyber Security?

A Maritime Cyber Security job involves protecting ships, ports, and maritime infrastructure from cyber threats. Professionals in this role assess vulnerabilities, implement security measures, and respond to cyber incidents affecting navigation, communication, and operational systems. They work with shipping companies, port authorities, and regulatory bodies to ensure compliance with cybersecurity regulations. This job requires knowledge of IT security, maritime operations, and risk management to safeguard critical maritime assets from cyberattacks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed for maritime cyber security?

To thrive as a Maritime Cyber Security professional, you need in-depth knowledge of cybersecurity principles, maritime systems (such as ECDIS and ballast water management), and compliance frameworks, often supported by a degree in computer science, information security, or a related field. Familiarity with tools like SIEM platforms, network intrusion detection systems, and certifications such as CISSP, CISM, or maritime-specific credentials like the BIMCO Cyber Security Awareness Certificate are highly beneficial. Strong analytical thinking, effective communication, and the ability to educate and coordinate with non-technical maritime personnel are valuable soft skills in this field. These competencies are crucial for safeguarding maritime assets against evolving cyber threats while ensuring safe operations across vessels and shore-based infrastructure.

What are the most common challenges faced in maritime cyber security?

Professionals in Maritime Cyber Security often face the challenge of protecting complex, legacy shipboard systems that were not designed with cybersecurity in mind, requiring creative solutions and thorough risk assessments. Working in this field frequently involves coordinating between diverse stakeholders including ship crews, shipping company IT departments, and regulatory authorities to ensure both compliance and operational safety. Adapting to rapidly evolving cyber threats and unique maritime operational conditions, such as remote vessel locations and limited connectivity, is a key part of the job. These challenges make the role both dynamic and rewarding, offering opportunities to make a tangible impact on global maritime safety.

Job description

MUST BE A US CITIZEN (Please do not apply if you are not)
Company Introduction
At BlackSea Technologies, we don't just innovate; we revolutionize.
We are a close-knit team of creative and innovative thinkers specializing in full lifecycle development of cutting-edge maritime technology. At BlackSea, you won't just find a job; you'll find a community of experts who aspire to solve diverse and complex challenges. Be part of a company where your ideas matter, your expertise is valued, and your contributions make a real impact. Together, we are not just sailing; we are charting a course to push boundaries of what's possible.
Cybersecurity Engineer (Mid-Level) - Product and Platform Security
Location: Flexible / Hybrid Baltimore Maryland
Company: BlackSea Technologies
Salary Range: $145,000 - $165,000 annually
BlackSea is building the next generation of maritime autonomy. Our systems deploy, operate, and deliver in the real world. We do not secure paper systems. We secure systems that deploy and operate in the real world
From unmanned surface vessels to mission systems and autonomy software, we design, manufacture, and operate mission-ready platforms at scale. Our systems are already in the water, already in use, and already shaping how autonomous fleets operate.
At the core of this is Mainstay, our autonomy platform. Mainstay connects onboard systems, sensors, autonomy software, communications, and operator interfaces into a single operational system. It enables vehicles to operate independently, integrate with external systems, and be managed across a fleet. As this platform grows, security has to be built into every layer, from onboard compute to communications to cloud and control systems. This role is responsible for helping make that happen.
This is not a compliance-only role. This is not a SOC analyst role. This is an engineering role for someone who can take security findings and turn them into real system improvements. Most cybersecurity roles protect internal systems. This one helps secure autonomous platforms operating in the real world. If you want to build systems that deploy, platforms that scale, and software that matters, this is the place to do it.
What You Will Do
• Secure the Platform End to End
• Help design and implement security controls across vessel systems, ground control systems, communications, and infrastructure
• Improve how data moves off deployed platforms and how software and configuration are managed across fleets
Turn Findings into Action
• Interpret security assessments and vulnerability findings
• Translate findings into engineering tasks and system improvements
• Work with engineering teams to ensure issues are resolved
Harden Real Systems
• Improve security across Linux systems, containers, and distributed components
• Strengthen authentication, access control, segmentation, and monitoring
• Reduce attack surface across onboard and offboard systems
Support Risk Reduction
• Analyze system vulnerabilities and failure modes
• Validate fixes and ensure issues are fully addressed
• Help systems remain resilient under degraded conditions
Strengthen Security Engineering Practices
• Define practical security requirements
• Contribute to documentation and technical artifacts
• Support ongoing improvement of platform security
What It Takes to Win Here
• Think in systems, interfaces, and failure modes
• Translate findings into real engineering actions
• Work across software, networking, and real systems
• Balance speed with rigor
• Take ownership without waiting for direction
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
• 3 to 7 years of cybersecurity or systems security experience
• Experience with Linux hardening, network security, vulnerability scanning, vulnerability remediation, or secure architecture
• Ability to interpret technical findings and drive remediation
• Familiarity with scripting in Bash, Powershell, or Python and automation systems.
Preferred
• Experience with embedded or autonomous systems
• Familiarity with distributed and edge systems
• Exposure to NIST or similar frameworks
• Experience with communications or control systems
• Relevant certifications such as CompTIA Security+, GIAC GSEC, CISSP, or OSCP
