What is manufacturing?

Manufacturing is the process of converting raw materials, components, or parts into finished goods through the use of machinery, tools, and labor. It is a critical sector in the economy, producing products for consumers and businesses alike. Manufacturing can include everything from small-scale craft production to large-scale industrial operations, covering industries such as automotive, electronics, food processing, and more. The process often involves design, engineering, assembly, quality control, and distribution steps.

What is a manufacturing job?

Manufacturing jobs involve creating new products and goods. Manufacturers use raw materials or separate components to build something entirely new. Whether it’s chemical, physical, or mechanical, as long as you are creating a product, you are working in manufacturing. The only exception is construction, which is considered separate from manufacturing. Manufacturing jobs include making prepackaged food or beverages, creating computers and electronics, and producing clothing. Bakers, printers, tailors, furniture builders, and woodworkers are all considered manufacturers. Most manufacturers work in a factory, mill, or plant, but you can also find work in labs.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive in a manufacturing role, and why are they important?

To thrive in a manufacturing role, you need a strong understanding of production processes, quality control, and safety protocols, often supported by a high school diploma or technical certification. Familiarity with industrial machinery, lean manufacturing principles, and systems such as ERP or CAD software is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are vital soft skills in this environment. These skills and qualifications are important to ensure efficient production, minimize errors, and maintain a safe and collaborative workplace.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in manufacturing, and how can these be addressed?

One common challenge in manufacturing roles is maintaining production efficiency while ensuring high quality and safety standards. Employees may face issues such as equipment malfunctions, supply chain delays, or adapting to new technologies. These challenges can be addressed by fostering strong teamwork, participating in continuous improvement programs, and staying up-to-date with training in safety procedures and equipment operation. Open communication with supervisors and colleagues also helps resolve issues quickly and maintain a smooth workflow.

What is the difference between Manufacturing vs Assembly Line Worker?

AspectManufacturingAssembly Line Worker
CredentialsOften requires technical skills or certifications in machinery or processesTypically requires basic skills and on-the-job training
Work EnvironmentFactories, production plants, involving various manufacturing processesAssembly lines within factories, focusing on assembling products
Industry UsageUsed across manufacturing sectors like automotive, electronics, and consumer goodsPrimarily found in automotive, electronics, and appliance manufacturing
Job ScopeEncompasses entire production processes, including planning and quality controlFocuses on assembling specific parts or products

Manufacturing involves comprehensive production processes, often requiring technical skills, while Assembly Line Workers focus on assembling products on specific lines with less technical training. Both roles are essential in the manufacturing industry but differ in scope and skill requirements.

What are examples of manufacturing jobs?

Manufacturing jobs include roles such as assembly line workers, machine operators, quality control inspectors, production supervisors, and maintenance technicians. These positions often require knowledge of tools, machinery, and safety protocols, and may involve working in factories or production plants with shift schedules.

What do you do in a manufacturing job?

A manufacturing job involves operating machinery, assembling products, and ensuring quality control in a factory setting. Workers may use tools, follow safety protocols, and work in shifts to meet production targets.

Job description

Promise Robotics is pioneering Physical AI for homebuilding - a rapidly growing, venture-backed company bringing together AI, robotics, and manufacturing to help the homebuilding industry meet the growing demand for housing. Our robotic systems, built and operated inside  AI-powered factories, give the industry the production capacity, consistency, and speed to build more high-quality homes than traditional methods allow. Our team spans AI researchers and roboticists to factory operators, technicians, and production teams - all building the future of homebuilding together.

We're looking for an Industrial Engineer to join our operations team and contribute to developing, improving and scaling of cutting-edge solutions for our core robotic manufacturing technologies.
You might be a good fit if you:
  • Have a passion for leading industry-changing solutions with significant social, economic, and environmental impact

  • Desire to play a founding role and reap the benefits as part of a growth-stage startup with significant upside

  • Enjoy building not only the technology but also high-performing teams and companies

  • Are committed to continuous learning at the intersection of several industries

What you'll do:
  • Support the deployment and launch of new manufacturing facilities, from planning and site preparation through commissioning, production ramp-up, and operational handoff.

  • Support factory launches by translating facility layouts into production-ready manufacturing environments with optimized workflow, material flow, staffing, ergonomics, and workstation design.

  • Prepare and manage plant layouts using AutoCAD, ensuring accurate representation of production lines, workstations, material flow paths, and storage areas.

  • Lead the implementation and optimization of entire manufacturing systems, work cells, and automated processes, including workstation configuration, tooling, material presentation, auxiliary equipment, fixture design, visual management, ergonomic principles, and standardized work to maximize safety, quality, productivity, and operator efficiency.

  • Partner with operations and engineering teams to ensure production lines are configured for safety, ergonomics, and optimal flow before and during ramp-up, complying with applicable standards (i.e. CSA, OSHA, etc.).

  • Develop and optimize manufacturing systems using data-driven analysis of production performance, bottlenecks, labour utilization, and key operational metrics.

  • Analyze end-to-end manufacturing systems, balancing people, equipment, robotics, material flow, and information flow to improve throughput, capacity, and operational performance.

  • Conduct time studies, line balancing, and capacity analyses to optimize throughput, labour utilization, and production flow.

  • Leverage simulation to optimize layouts, identify capacity constraints, and support production ramp-up planning.

  • Apply Lean Manufacturing principles including 5S, Kaizen, Kanban, Value Stream Mapping, Poka-Yoke, standard work, and visual management to eliminate waste, improve flow, and sustain operational excellence.

  • Lead cross-functional continuous improvement initiatives using Lean methodologies and structured problem-solving to improve safety, quality, delivery, cost, and productivity.

  • Troubleshoot manufacturing process and line performance issues in real time, implementing corrective actions to restore production efficiency.

  • Other duties as assigned.

What you'll need to succeed:
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Industrial, Manufacturing, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related discipline, with demonstrated experience applying Industrial Engineering principles within a manufacturing environment.

  • 5+ years of experience as an Industrial Engineer, Manufacturing Engineer, or in a similar manufacturing engineering role, with demonstrated application of Lean Manufacturing principles.

  • Proficiency in AutoCAD for developing plant layouts, production line layouts, process flow diagrams, and facility drawings.

  • Experience supporting manufacturing simulation by developing input models, interpreting simulation results, and translating findings into practical production improvements.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to optimize manufacturing systems using data-driven decision making.

  • Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively alongside operations, engineering, maintenance, quality, and leadership teams.

  • Working knowledge of manufacturing ergonomics, material handling systems, point-of-use storage, and efficient material flow design.

  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally.

  • A relentless desire to learn, innovate, and contribute in the rapidly evolving field of industrial automation.
